I like to read one good book about Indian History at the time of Independence(Before/After). Any suggestions please?

India After Gandhi by Ramachandra Guha

As the name suggests, It takes you on a journey back in time right after India got Independence. It’s a gem of a book. I would highly recommend it.

Haven't read this book. This was available for 60 bucks or such a few days back. Should have grabbed it then. Better luck next time! smile What exactly does he write about in "Indian History"? India's political history? Economic advancement? Or something else? Everything included? Because to write a comprehensive history of India in these 60+ years would take volumes upon volumes. So, what exactly is it? wink

"@Magus":https://www.desidime.com/users/...03 I agree with you that it's difficult, if not impossible, to encapsulate 60 years of rich Indian history in mere 800 pages or so. But guess what? He has done exactly that in this book. The book incorporates almost all the topics you mentioned above and also a few others. Though I must admit it doesn't capture all the small details but it's good enough to get you started. I would like to read about Indian history before independence. Do you have anything compelling in mind?:-}

Thanks for the review. smile Sorry mate, no idea about books on history before / after independence. I'm not much into the history of nations. I'm more of a "history of thought / philosophy / religion" guy. Perhaps, "@Dr Anshuman":https://www.desidime.com/users/...21 could throw some light on your query. cool

A.L. Basham's "The Wonder That Was India" . Gotta warn you though. Its ginormous as you would expect. P.S. Keep in mind this was written several decades back. Some of the concepts for ex. Aryan Invasion theory hv since been disproved. More modern works by Romila Thapar,Bipan Chandra are just way too influenced by Marxist ideologies. Apparently to be secular in India means you hv to bash the Hindu majority!

Exactly. I haven't developed the courage to touch the book yet only because of that. toungueout

But it should also be kept in mind that those scholars who have tried to disprove this theory clearly have pro-Hindu tendencies (and are backed by BJP). So, in my opinion, this is still an open end where many more unbiased researchers need to work upon. smile

Do read it. It’s a gem of a book. You will never get the feeling that it is a philosophical book, where “philosophical” generally means boring. Will Durant is one of those rare philosphers / historians who understood that philosophy could never be divorced completely from the way the philosopher lived. It reflects in every page of the book. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

@MD what’d you say about Naqab and Laal Nishan! The other day saw at some AH Wheeler cart: Colaba Conspiracy. Didn’t pick it though (hurry to receive someone)

@Jairaj Batman and others are right. Actually its not easy to find some work that is comprehensive or has something more than the obvious, without the views being too coloured based on editor/ writer’s perception.

Been a while but saw 9789351763253 on the desk of a student
preparing for some exams. And there are lighter works like 9788126900855.

Somehow I too have found Guha or Thapar to be bit elitist and coloured.

As @Magus mentioned, if you want to delve more specifically into specific aspects.. you may think of more local thinkers of our times. But that means going vernacular or risking a translation.

Just the other day in some book topic, i mentioned Kuldeep Nayyar’s Dur ke Padosi (Distant Neighbours)
http://central.tnopac.gov.in/cgi-bin/koha/opac-...

some look at it from the socio-political prism. Others like Florence Nightingale raised voice about and wrote a lot on health and other issue pertaining to the subcontinent.

I am obviously refraining from getting into the unidirectional, almost fictional works like ‘Freedom at Midnight’ by Collins or even other works of Kuldeep Nayyar (like Scoop!) that are a mere collage of various ‘information’ at best.

anyone going to the Yacht party this weekend?

`

`

heard that Mallya saab is organising one, with many biggies like Lalit Modi, Subroto Roy, Asaram, Kaskar family in attendance.

It seems he got the Idea after he heard that many who wouldn’t want to do Surya Namaskar will be driven to sea. Such a party animal I say https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_rolleyes.gif so now all ‘at sea’ Bhartiya junta can party hard.
