Thanks.
The thing is I’ve very basic BSNL broadband here and I don’t want to spend my bandwidth on this audio book alone.
Finished two books recently.
1) Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal
A very entertaining book. Beginning 40% and last 30% were excellent. Middle portion of the book was boring. I knew that already – a goodreads reviewer wrote about it.
Anyway it was exactly what i needed – a humorous book set in medieval times. Rating 9/10
2) Which comes first: Cardio or Weights? by Alex Hutchinson.
10/10. A very informative and lucid book. It dispelled many myths i held related to exercises. It should be read by anyone who cares for his health.
My new favorite book.
These are the books that i am planning to read in near future. Most of them are non fiction, so i have started reading them simultaneously.
1) Plato and Platypus Walk into a Bar – Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes
Small book. Introduces basic tenets of philosophy through jokes. I am reading this book just for fun
2) Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers by Robert M. Sapolsky
This book explores the nature of stress and anxiety. Bit technical. Here is the brief introduction
“Now in a third edition, Robert M. Sapolsky’s acclaimed and successful Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers features new chapters on how stress affects sleep and addiction, as well as new insights into anxiety and personality disorder and the impact of spirituality on managing stress.
As Sapolsky explains, most of us do not lie awake at night worrying about whether we have leprosy or malaria. Instead, the diseases we fear-and the ones that plague us now-are illnesses brought on by the slow accumulation of damage, such as heart disease and cancer. When we worry or experience stress, our body turns on the same physiological responses that an animal’s does, but we do not resolve conflict in the same way-through fighting or fleeing. Over time, this activation of a stress response makes us literally sick.
Combining cutting-edge research with a healthy dose of good humor and practical advice, Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers explains how prolonged stress causes or intensifies a range of physical and mental afflictions, including depression, ulcers, colitis, heart disease, and more. It also provides essential guidance to controlling our stress responses. This new edition promises to be the most comprehensive and engaging one yet.”
3) The Willpower Instinct – Kelly McGonigal
This book looks like a self help book but it is not. It is about Habits. There is another book on habits currently topping the charts, most reviewers held this book in high esteem.
4) Quiet – Susan Cain
A book on introverts. This book is at the top of bestsellers list. I didn’t really want to read this but the author’s writing style has captivated me.
5) Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse

I haven’t explored this area much yet. In fact i stopped reading books few years ago (my worst decision probably).
Now that i have an ereader, i am living a rich life.
Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse is a good short book, but you may know about it already. I have read beginning 25% of it and it is very good.

There is no philosophy at the surface, only at the depth. One can even say, whatever there is in the surface is just crap, not philosophy.

This had always been a problem between my professors and myself in the university.
Philosophy cannot be reduced to ideas. Whatever goes in the name of philosophy in the textbooks is not philosophy per se. It can be said to be reductionism in its most perverted form. No philosophy, let alone Indian philosophy, could be studied in such a fashion. In fact, philosophical discourse becomes the main enemy of philosophy in the long run.
I do not know if there are any Indian authors who have come up with books true to the spirit of philosophy. But there is one French author, Pierre Hadot, who has written some wonderful books on this subject. Of course, his expertise is in Greek and Roman Philosophy. But the message is stunningly close to the spirit of Indian Philosophy proper.
You may start with one wonderful book. The book is available on flipkart at 60% off: http://www.flipkart.com/what-is-ancient-philoso...
You can find my review too there.
