What is CoWIN?

CoWIN stands for Winning against Coronavirus. It is an online or digital system developed by the Government of India for distributing Coronavirus Vaccine effectively. The Cowin app is also under development as most Indian users are mobile friendly for digital purposes.

How Will the Coronavirus Vaccine be Distributed in India?

As we know that India is a highly populated country so distributing Coronavirus Vaccine effectively needs to be planned and executed well. Thus, the Government has decided that in the first phase, people involved with essential services will be vaccinated and that too for free. These include the following categories.

Healthcare Staff

Around 1 Crore healthcare workers from government and private hospitals will receive the vaccine. These include child health staff, nurses, supervisors, paramedical workers, medical officers, support staff, and medical students.

Frontline Heros

The Government will provide vaccines to nearly 2 crore frontline warriors. These include police, armed forces, civil defence, disaster management, prison workers, municipal staff, Covid-19 revenue officers, and other related workers.

50+ Aged

Citizens aging above 50 will get this service regardless of their gender, but priority will be given to 60+ aged people. Age will be counted based on the latest election details and end date for reference will be 1st January 2021.

High Containment Zones

Areas where the Covid-19 infection is high or rapidly rising will get the vaccine first. You can checkout your area for the containment zone via the Aarogya Setu app.

People with illness linked to Covid-19

There are many people having diseases which can lead to severe Covid-19 impact so they will be accounted for. These illnesses include Cancer, Diabetes, Hypertension, Lung infection, and more.

Oxford’s Covishield has completed Phase 3 trial and now authorized in India. All is good.

But Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin is still in Phase 3, there is no data in public domain, and the results are not peer-reviewed. And yet government has approved it in the same way as Covishield is approved! All due to ego and PR. But people must beware.

Arey if ola is known to send a driver without a driving license and uber sends expert drivers only, then why would I even ride with Ola? Moreover, unlike riding a cab, healthcare is a basic right, so if a vaccine is available everyone should get it eventually.

Stop making stupid analogies.

I’ll prefer Oxford’s Covishield. As Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin is still in Phase 3. I Won’t Take Covaxin Until Efficacy Data is made public. The clearance given by DCGI to Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin without efficacy data has been done on the wrong basis.

Do you know details of Covishield? They have also given wrong information. They said it is 70% effective after moderna and pfizer results they said it is more than 90% effective.

Can we choose which vaccine we want to take?

Deal Cadet Deal Cadet

Unfortunately No.
Distribution will be area wise. So all people residing in one area will receive the same vaccine.

That’s not how things work. If I want to take the tested covishield vaccine instead of the untested covaxin, I should have that choice. “Take this random vaccine or don’t take a vaccine at all” is not a solution. Everyone deserves healthcare.

Let me put few words as a front line worker in covid and as a doctor. No vaccine is ever 100% safe…period. all vaccine not only covid can cause serious side effects but as time passes they are made more safer. Unfortunately the time constraints and sudden pendamic with a large no of deaths has taken devils form, causing the rush to introduce the vaccine. In no way present vaccines can be more safer than those which were introduced long ago but then the time is not merciful looking at scenario. The choice is now between the devil and deep blue sea. And front line workers are the ones in most dilemma. They are exposed to devil and no vaccine is 100%safe. My personal opinion is that those in lower risk catagory can delay the shot for few more months before biting the bullet. As for political association or linking of vaccine I don’t think any government is ready for backlash God forbid if things went South. No politician wants to carry weight of dead people on his shoulders.

Totally Agree. Facts – these approved vaccines aren’t so safe either but matter of fact is atleast it makes you safer from Covid19. Govt has taken the initiative for those who already exposed to it could get safety first.

If someone needs to have assured 99% vaccine, will have to wait for atleast 3-5 years. Hope you know how the drug gets approved after all scrutiny. Waiting period could make increase in more deaths. Think about that as well.

Does somebody know when will CoWin app roll out to general public for registration?

Deal Cadet Deal Cadet

Update 01.03.2021: Today I used the online CoWIN interface to register (for my grandmother). Got an appointment on the same day and went to the center soon after. Only after going they informed that the only vaccine available under the new scheme (starting 1st March 2021) is COVAXIN. There is no option to get Covishield (the one made by Oxford with genuine efficacy data) unless it’s your second dose. Hence we cancelled the appointment and came back.

They also told us that until now the special cases (frontline workers, teachers, vote duty) were given COVISHIELD only. But the new people aged >60 years (or >45+comorbidities) registering under the new phase will be given COVAXIN. Looking at the docs, it seemed it is in a “clinical trial mode”. This is expected because the efficacy data is STILL not public after 2 months of approval! I am nothing but shocked at the level of cronyism that’s going on in the name of vaccination. Sad.

Isn’t COVAXIN the only one proven to fight the 2nd mutation. COVISHIELD (Oxford) has no data related to this.
