If one isn't knowledgeable in terms of market and how stock works it's better to invest in mutual funds directly from the fund management company. You can check the fund performance for the past 5 years and decide on the course you want to take ( High risk - moderate risk - low risk)
If you actually want to buy stocks from companies then the correct way is to see their audited balance sheets and go through their agendas discussed at board meetings and annual reports.
The latter involves a lot of work and studying the details of the company and what they are working in along with the current & forecasted global events.
