Unless things are too dire, the https://odelices.ouest-france.fr/recette/pain-pita-r2159 pita pressing, tortilla pressing machines https://amazon.com/b?node=3741681 are not much used in the longer run, by most people.
What we refer to as a 'roti maker', essentially is a reinvented tortilla pressing machine and now the electric variants of it claim to even bake the chapati or be used for reheating them too.
There are too many variables though, besides the skill and tact of the user themselves.
Things like how the dough was prepared, allowed to sit for a while.. has a bearing on whether the chapati puffs up or bakes evenly or not.
Whether the grain is ground too finely or is coarse.. .... ... too affects the dough and how easily it soaks in the moisture at the molecular level, when (and if) it is allowed to sit for a while before being rolled or pressed for the chapati shape and baked.
The electric machines which claim to bake the chapati after the user hand-cranks the lever.. rely on the hand crank being used in just the right manner.
Other machines take that variable away by letting the user 'close' the top/mobile part till its final resting place.
Those with inbuilt timers, thermostat combinations.. would puff out the chapati if the user manually intervenes at the right time to loosen the plates a bit.
Some techniques may also require manual intervention, in flipping the chapati, during the baking process.
In recent years, other members here have informed of having had some/ reasonable success with 'Prestige' brand products.
But personally, I would rather go to a Taliban office and do idol worship there
or introduce myself to Netanyahu as a commander of H _ _ _ _,
than to regularly use nonstick cookware, bakeware.
The non non-stick versions of electic pita/ tortilla/ roti makers usually have peculiarities which cannot always be worked around.
I opened my submission with a qualifier and i end my submission by giving an example of it.
A user here on DesiDime itself, would rather spend more time by the side of his ailing parent and taking care of them, than (to) spend even an avoidable moment away from them.
Not to mention the stresses and exhaustion of being a 24×7 'care giver'.
In such cases all those arguments go out of the window for him. It does not matter that it hardly takes two, two and half minutes to manually roll the dough.
To such a 24×7 care-giver cum professional/ businessperson.. it does not matter that it takes almost the same time (and sometimes, even less time) to manually bake it on a griddle/tawa.
Or the arguments about product longevity issues, component failure or even cases of the complete product failure.
Someone in his shoes (in his position) would much rather take their chances with that goddamn machine, even if it gives a fractional percentage chance of allowing them more time to assist, care for their (almost bedridden) parent or reduces their workload.
