I compared them to piston 2 bro. No where near them. They’ve got that name except that 202 is pretty average.

I do not have piston 3 earphones, but I looked at technical specs of both piston 3 & sony mdr xb30ex.

My assumptions are …

Brand: Sony is Best
Sensitivity: sony: 105 db/mw, piston3: 98db/mw (this means for same volume level sony xb30ex sound almost 1.3 times more than Piston3)

Driver Unit: Sony 13.5 mm, piston3: Not given but looked at the size, I can estimate it could be around 10-11mm
(More the driver unit, more the muscle, more bass reproduction capability)

Con: Sony does not have mic

Piston 3 is just hype, Sony is better I assume

The only model that can beat MDR XB30EX is Sony MDR XB90EX
If you can get other model Sony MDR XB90EX then you will feel BASS kicks, because it is having 16mm driver

impedance: both are 32 ohms, so power handling capability/power consumption of both are same

I am no Audiophile, but Sony Mdr Xb30 is one of the best when it comes to Sound quality, bass, durability etc.

i would take your word only if you have used both. i have the twinwoofers and they are pretty amazing. i was not going to replace them unless i find something that’s earth shattering. these are selling for a very low price and i got interested as a result.

still i would like to hear the verdict from someone who has used both.

Piston 3 has very wide open sound with low bass. These Sony are are ONLY about bass. It’s a basshead iem.

I’ve been there on your side…rooting for the neutral sound signature in head-fi forums…investing a fortune on audio equipment….being pedantic to the point of laughing at others with stupid 500Rs. earphones. It all came to an end when I realised I was suffering from higher freq moderate hearing loss thru this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=m... and whats worse, my hearing was not even as good as what my mum had….only my grandmom was anywhere near my hearing capabilities! All my audiophile prejudices came crashing down when I realised all the money I spent to use my ears better, were in fact shoving me into a path of hearing impaired elderhood. Yeah, I was almost orgasming at that Pearl Jam riff….but at what expense! Hearing loss is something that is so common among audiophiles and its so rarely discussed because it is in a way shameful….like being a chef and losing the sense of taste…..and it’s not even well researched for lack of data as the audiophile industry is a relatively young one.

TLDR; Life is too short to be be assigning yourself stereotypes and being stuck up on a high horse. I’ve known quite a few people who silently own and love basshead headphones but behave like the stereotypical audiophile. And, I’ve personally realised that the title of an audiophile is just as empty as that of the Valentine’s day….meaningless….created and popularised to extort more and more money.
