In 2005, when the Indian Tax Department first raised a demand of ₹120 Crore against Telgi, it was one of the highest tax demands against an individual. Two years later, he was convicted of the scam and awarded 30 years of imprisonment and a fine of ₹202 Crores! Yes, I am talking about Scam 2003: The Telgi Story web series which has created a buzz after its trailer launch 3 days back. It comes on the back of Hansal Mehta’s Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story (stock market scam of ₹5000 Crores) which was a humongous hit.
Scam 2003: The Telgi Story is about ‘Indian stamp & stamp paper’ scams carried out by the underdog mastermind Abdul Karim Telgi who did odd jobs (selling food in trains, fake passports, etc) before this big impact as he saw a loophole in the system and maximized the opportunity illegaly.
Scam 2003: The Telgi Story show is adapted from the Hindi book Reporter ki Diary (Reporter’s Diary), authored by journalist & news reporter Sanjay Singh.
