UPI transactions failing or not working? Several users on X (formerly Twitter) reported their UPI transactions to be failing since February 5th. This included several major banks such as SBI, HDFC, Central Bank of India, etc. NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) finally addressed the issue yesterday on its X handle. Here are the complete details of it.
UPI Transactions Failing Issue Reported by Users
The issue of UPI transactions failing was addressed by NPCI only yesterday (6th February), some users claim to have been facing it since February 1st.
The issue is said to be affecting most major banks and payment apps including Paytm, Amazon Pay UPI, GPay, PhonePe, Cred, etc. However, banks have yet to address the same.
NPCI Addresses UPI Not Working, Says “Internal Technical Issue”
NPCI released a tweet yesterday on February 6th saying the following, “Regret inconvenience on UPI connectivity as few of the banks are having some internal technical issues. NPCI systems are working fine and we are working with these banks to ensure quick resolution.”
Regret inconvenience on UPI connectivity as few of the banks are having some internal technical issues. NPCI systems are working fine and we are working with these banks to ensure quick resolution.
NPCI hasn’t specifically mentioned what this internal technical issue is that is causing several users’ UPI transactions to fail. However, as per complaints shared by users, the bank servers are down.
Banks that are reportedly facing the issue of UPI not working
Central Bank of India
HDFC Bank
Bank of Baroda
Kotak Mahindra Bank
SBI
These are the banks that are most reported to have their UPI transactions failing. None of these banks however have yet addressed the problem.
UPI Not Working. What Can You Do?
As per NPCI’s tweet, the issue is not with the NPCI Payments System but with the bank's internal tech (for example, bank severs) So chances your UPI might still work depending on your bank & even the time you are reading this article. However, here are some things you can do while banks resolve the UPI not working issue:
If possible postpone doing any major UPI transaction (as your money might get stuck. Though this kind of transaction should automatically fail in some hours/days and you will receive a refund if your money was debited)
Some general guidelines on UPI transaction disputes:
As per NPCI’s guidelines on the Dispute Redressal Mechanism, if a UPI transaction fails but money is debited, users need to first raise a complaint to the TPAP (Third-Party Application Provider). If unresolved, raise a complaint to the PSP bank and then to NPCI. If still not resolved, customers can finally approach the Banking Ombudsman. 2. I have made the payment but have not received a successful payment SMS or confirmation.
In some cases, if you have made the payment but haven’t received a confirmation from your bank, it might be due to the operator issue. If you do not receive the same within an hour, please raise a complaint to your bank.
