Jio Space Technology Limited (JPL), a subsidiary of Reliance has finally brought Jio Space Fiber to India. The launch of Jio Space Fiber comes after almost a year of its announcement back in 2022. Jio describes the Satellite Fiber technology as “India's first satellite-based gigabit broadband to connect the remotest corners of India.” Read on to learn what we know so far about the Jio Space Technology launch date in India, the possible cost of plans (expected), and installation.

Jio SpaceFiber Launched in India

Jio Space Technology Limited (JPL) and SES have partnered to bring space fiber technology to India. First announced in 2022, a report by SES stated that “JPL and SES will own 51% and 49% equity stake in the joint venture respectively.”

As per the report, the Indian telecom company Jio has entered into a multi-year agreement with SES to provide satellite data and services in the country, amounting to a purchase value of approximately US $100 million.

After more than a year of announcement, Jio finally launched Jio SpaceFiber in India on October 27th, Friday at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) in the presence of the honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi.

What is Jio Space Fiber?

Jio Space Fiber is a new satellite-based broadband service in India built in partnership with the European tech SES and launched in select remote locations of the country on October 27th, Friday, 2023. The Jio Space Fiber. It will use a combination of GEO and MEO satellites to provide internet connectivity across India. By integrating the satellite network with Jio's 4G/5G terrestrial infrastructure, the service aims to deliver affordable, high-speed internet even in remote areas.

Jio Space Fiber First Look (Images)

In the recent video posted by the telco, customers can see a glimpse of the Jio satellite gigabit fiber technology. Don’t worry if at first, you didn’t seem to understand those complex-looking equipment and the purpose of them. Let us explain it to you in simple terms:

Jio Space Fiber First Look (Images)

How does Jio Space Fiber work?
Do you see those mushroom-looking terminals in the above image? Well, these are pretty advanced SES or satellite communication ground stations that help receive data back from the GEO & MEO satellites placed more than 8,000 KM above the earth’s surface.

Jio says that along with the help of Jio AirFiber and JioFiber, this technology would help the telco provide fast & reliable data even in the remotest areas of the country.

How does Jio Space Fiber work?

While there aren’t many details out yet, there’s a possibility that these ground station satellite communicators would be connected to the Jio AirFiber (wireless) broadband tech to provide data in remote areas where optic fibers cannot be placed and neither Jio AirFiber can work on its own (due to less cellular towers availability)

So by combining satellite communication with Jio AirFiber, the telco can bring its data services to not only remote areas but also disaster-affected areas, off-shore oil rigs, cruise ships, etc.

Jio Space Fiber Launch Date in India

The Jio Space Fiber launch date in India is October 27, 2023, and the telecom has already connected four of the remotest locations in India, namely Gir Gujarat, Korba Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur Odissa, and ONGC-Jorhat Assam.

The telecom giant, Jio has not revealed any details on the Jio Space Fiber availability in other cities/villages of the country but the brand has stated that including the urban and semi-urban areas can benefit from the service. So, it would be interesting to see if Jio launches Jio Space Fiber in other cities of the country too.

Jio Space Fiber Plans (Expected)

Jio has stated to keep the Jio SpaceFiber plans “highly affordable.” While the telco hasn’t revealed any specific price point, If we compare the Jio Space Fiber service with Starlink Satellite Internet service, the price point that comes up does not seem very affordable for most rural and semi-urban areas.

Starlink Internet plans cost in India isn’t revealed yet but approximately these plans cost about INR 7,000 or so per month. In comparison to this, it would be interesting to see what the Jio SpaceFibe plan’s price would be. Also, customers would need to purchase a one-time kit for Jio SpaceFiber as they need to do it for Starlink Internet Service.

Difference Between Jio Space Fiber vs Normal Fiber Connection vs Cellular Network Towers

Many of us aren’t as tech savvy and sometimes it's difficult to understand a new technology and how exactly it works & differs from the existing one. The same could be said for the Jio Space Fiber service.

If you are confused about what is the difference between Jio Space Fiber vs Jio Fiber vs the normal cellular network towers we use, know that you aren’t alone. While I am neither a tech geek, I have tried putting together this simple comparison table for you to get a rough idea of what these technologies are and how they differ.

Jio Space Fiber vs Jio Fiber vs Mobile Network (cellular towers)

Features

Jio Space Fiber

Optic Fiber Connection

Mobile Network Towers

Connectivity

Wireless

Wired

Wireless

Tech used

Combination of satellites in Geostationary Orbit (GEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) constellation

Optical Fiber Communication or Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)

Antennas, transmitters, and receivers

How it works?

Device sends data >> Ground station sends radio waves >> Satellite receives signals >> Satellite beams to ground station >> Ground station receives >> Sends data wirelessly

User device sends data >> Data converted to light signals >> Fiber optic cable carries light signals >> Light signals received by ISP router >> ISP router routes data on fiber optic main network >> Data sent over fiber to destination network router >> Destination router converts light signals back to data

Device sends data >> Tower receives radio signals >> Connects to network >> Routes data >> Sends radio signals >> Device receives data

Jio Space Fiber Installation

Currently, there aren’t many details out yet about what the installation process of the Jio Space Fiber looks like. However, from what we have seen and read so far, the technology would likely need equipment like satellite dish antennas, Jio Space ground station terminals, and a wireless router such as Jio AirFiber.

So this was all about sharing all that we know so far about the Jio Space Fiber internet connection and what it means, and what we know about the Jio Space Fiber plans pricing as well as the difference between it vs the normal optic fiber connection and cellular tower network. We hope this article helps you understand a little better about how the Jio Space Fiber works and what it is. Do share with us your thoughts in the comments below.
