Paytm’s UPI market share continued to decline from 13% in January to 7% in September 2025 possibly as a result of RBI’s ban on PPBL earlier this year. The other possible reason could also be the highly competitive UPI market that boasts some strong players like PhonePe, GPay and even the launch of some new players such as the Supermoney app by Flipkart that grew by 10X in August - September 2025 and is aiming to be amongst the top 5 UPI apps in India by the end of this year.
Regardless of what the reason is, if you wish to delete your Paytm account permanently (UPI account), here’s an 2025 updated step-by-step guide for you.
Things to Know Before You Close Your Paytm Account Permanently (2025 Updated)

If I delete my Paytm account, will my Paytm Payments Bank account also get deleted?
Paytm faced RBI’s strict regulatory ban on PPBL earlier this year. Later, in an effort to continue its business, Paytm tied up with several third-party banks, such as Axis, SBI, HDFC, etc., to facilitate payments without any restrictions. All UPI IDs ending with the “@paytm” extension had to be migrated to other third-party bank extensions.
Because of the RBI’s ban, millions of Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL) customers had to either close their accounts or quickly use their Paytm Wallet balance. Some people even found their wallet money stuck since the app asked for re-KYC, but wouldn’t actually accept it due to the ban. With these restrictions, users only have a few choices left on hand: Keep following up with Paytm’s customer care (which isn’t always helpful) OR seek help from the RBI Ombudsman OR forget about the money in your wallet.
So undoubtedly this hit by RBI not only impacted millions of Paytm users but also the company itself. The company’s losses widened ₹550 Cr following the RBI ban in Q4 of FY2024.
In the midst of all of this though, the good news as of today is that RBI has given approval to Paytm to onboard new UPI users to its app. OCL (One97 Communications Limited) the company that owns Paytm announced in August this year that they have got approval from RBI for their Paytm Payments & Services Business (PPSL). For those who may not know, PPSL is OCL’s payment aggregator arm.
