in 2010 one company with 2.5 cr net worth started to bid up pan india 4g spectrum and got it for 12000 cr, some days later reliance took over that company and started the Jio, they imported 4g equipments when everyone was busy with 3g and there was very less tax on those imports, by the time others realized they already have best 4g network of the country
telecom is a very capital heavy business even with the edges reliance has they spent lakhs of crores to create infrastructure, no other company has that much deep pocket to do that, thats why telecom will be a duopoly like now for unforeseeable future

Even internationally very few telecom operators in each country. It is heavy investment and low return business.
In every developed countries there are mainly 2-3 major telecom companies.
It's a lie people usually tell that in India jio is having monopoly over telecom industry.
In Saudi there are 2 major companies.
1 is etisalat having 70% market share.
Very very hard to set up a nationwide infrastructure and to constantly keep upgrading and all the maintenance that goes along with it. The return margins in India are some the lowest as well.
We could have 2 models - like USA where they have 3 major networks (ATT, Verizon and TMobile) and some smaller regional players who use those networks but provide their own plans. The drawback is they can collude and set the prices and the far and tough to reach places dont have network because it is not profitable.
Or the China model where there are 3 state owned networks that function in a pseudo independent way and compete among themselves. Their govt has unlimited funds and frankly they have far better planning and implementation when it comes to tech. Compare that to our BSNL which is languishing in losses due to apathy from the govt and mismanagement.
Capex heavy business. High chances of disruption from new technologies. Govt regulated sector. Some business are inherently bad business e.g airlines, telecom etc.
Market and support , see the change when govt change
I doubt it because business will always be same:P xD because they will do something similar to El*c**ral some bond trick xD
Waiting for adani telecom now
4g-5g will stay for long so I think more players will step in soon.
It's not limited to Telcos. Large corporations are able to make major investments, have better Research and Development, greater resources, deep pockets, and eventually become stronger due to their profits. It takes a lot to stay competitive in the market, esp in a market as price-sensitive as India. Not everyone can thrive. Consider the following:
Ola - Uber
Amazon - Walmart
DMart - Reliance
SpaceX - Blue Origin - Virgin Galactic
Zomato - Swiggy
Netflix - Amazon Prime Video
Apple (iOS) - Google (Android)
Pepsi - Coca-Cola
Microsoft
AT&T - Verizon - T-Mobile
X
Boeing - Airbus
Visa - Mastercard
Novo Nordisk - Eli Lilly
Adidas - Nike
leave MNC and private player even govt PSU like BSNL is enough to defeat them all but seems they will never go beyond 3G
As government is same for 10yrs now...BSNL ab tk bchaya hua hai in logo ne yhi bhut hai.
Seems the OP was living under the rock when India's biggest scam 2G happened.
