it is not totally out of context that I equate Hastinapur (the mythical kingdom) with Desidime.

I was roaming in a forest with few friends and we caught them from there. I felt quite wired when one guy in our gang (tribal) eat the tongue of monitor without even cooking. He was saying that was the secret of his stamina. Good old memories

It is unfortunate to see so much personal attack in a supposedly innocuous thread. Perhaps this is an indication of the level of “intolerance” in our country today.

The food habits are primarily dependent upon the social and cultural norms. What is acceptable in one culture may be completely prohibited in another. Worldwide, the highest single source of animal protein is beef. But in India, for a majority of the population, the thought itself is repulsive. In costal area, fish is the primary source, but many people of North and Central India can not even stand the smell of it, even though they may be consuming huge quantity of chicken and mutton. In certain parts of the country, dog meat and fried insects are considered a delicacy. Yet in other parts, it can cause mental distress. The definition of “vegetarian” also changes in different parts of India. Certain segment of the population consider Mushrooms, Onions, Garlic and even Masoor Dal as non-veg.

More than a 100 years ago, a great Indian Scientist proved that even plants are alive and respond to stimuli. So even the vegetarians are eating some form of life form.

Anthropologically, it has been proved that at some point of development into modern homo sapiens, our ancestors took to the sea, which is evidenced in the lack of body hair and elongated feet and also in residual gills that some children are still born with. Also by the fact that a child can learn to swim even before learning to walk. Obviously in water, our ancestors could not have survived on vegetarian food and at least must have aquatic non-veg food. Our dental structure is not suited for raw animal flesh. But it can easily handle raw fish. It is also scientifically accepted that the development of the brain, that lead to modern human, was also triggered by consumption of non-veg protein.

At the end of it all, the choice for veg or non-veg comes only when a person has the luxury of choice. When a person is in poverty or in placed at a position where food source is extremely limited, survival instincts come into action. He must have whatever food is available and within his purchasing power, just to remain alive. Even today, many poor people in this country survive on clams or mussels from the ponds and rivers. For them, it is the only source of protein.
