Several states, including New Delhi, Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Kerala are considering pilot projects for this initiative

In Short

  • Online platforms may start delivering low-alcohol drinks
  • States considering pilot projects for alcohol delivery
  • Authorities assessing pros and cons of alcohol deliveries

Online delivery platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, and BigBasket might soon start delivering low-alcohol drinks such as beer, wine, and liqueurs, reported The Economic Times.

Delivery of alcohol to homes is permitted only in Odisha and West Bengal, according to the report. The temporary approval for liquor deliveries during the COVID-19 lockdown in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Assam was a success despite restrictions, per the ET report. According to retail industry executives, online deliveries have resulted in a 20-30% increase in sales in West Bengal and Odisha.

"This is to cater to a growing expat population, especially in larger cities, changing profiles of consumers who perceive moderate alcohol-content spirits as recreational drinking along with meals, and women and senior citizens who have flagged buying from traditional liquor vends and shop-front experiences as unpleasant," said an industry executive as quoted in the report.

Dinker Vashisht, Vice-President of Corporate Affairs at Swiggy, highlighted the benefits of online delivery models. He mentioned that it ensures end-to-end transaction records, age verification, and adherence to limits.

"Further, online tech stacks synchronize with regulatory and excise requirements, ensuring adherence to timings, dry days, and zonal delivery guardrails," he said.

Rahul Singh, Chief Executive of pub chain The Beer Cafe, shared his views with The Economic Times and said, “By enabling online home deliveries of liquor, states can enhance consumer convenience, drive economic growth, and align with global trends while ensuring responsible and regulated alcohol distribution.”

In the name of revenues, 'bridge the deficit'
some day our countries (politicians) would even legalise ____ (like Australia, Switzerland, Amsterdam, Thailand) 😡😠

and then Oyo rooms and Urban clap/ladder would start launching co-branded offers😭🥺👎🏼 that you can come to oyo or get the same delivered at home.

Now why blame Flipkart, Amazon for letting some jilted lover procure acid like substances
or the bar/pub and parents of the teen who hot served alcohol despite underage (while driving his Porsche later).

Now, just like UPSC disability certificates, people will pay for using the age proof/ ID of some berizgaar/ underprivileged.

Just like Ola, Jugnoo, Uber Disclaimer responsibility by saying we are merely a platform.. we do not own the vehicles and drivers are no our employees

same way the delivery platforms will also claim that we sold the alcohol to someone who was of legal age.. we have all documentary evidence.

But in reality the alcohol would end up also witj underage kids.

Liok at how our people behave (misbehave), sexually harass others on flights and pass lewd remarks on crew or others.

Imagine people getting cheap alcohol right at their doorstep and coming out (of the home and) in the building already drunk.

Anyway, local wine sjopa often already do home delivery. Unfortunately we act like cowards andvsay nothing, when our own cousins (girls/ladies) and their other flatmates (girls too) get their fix delivered at their flat from the nearby wineshop.
Maybe no big change would be seen after government lets cigarette, alcohol be sold via these platforms. Okay wait, I think Swiggy already sells cigarettes and that paper and tobacco which gets used for rolling.
