TIMES OF INDIA: Swiggy has entered the live events ticketing market with 'Scenes' , a new feature within its app that allows users to purchase tickets for restaurant-hosted events, directly challenging Zomato's recently launched District platform.
Currently launched in Bengaluru, Scenes allows users to book tickets directly through the Swiggy app for various events including New Year's Eve parties, live music performances, and DJ nights at partner restaurants.
The feature is strategically integrated into Swiggy's existing superapp, leveraging its large user base of 17.1 million monthly transacting users – a 19% year-on-year increase in Q2FY25.
Unlike Zomato's District platform, which offers a wider range of event and movie ticketing, Scenes is focused exclusively on live dining and entertainment experiences.
Swiggy's expansion plans extend beyond Scenes. The company has filed to create a wholly-owned subsidiary dedicated to sports activities, amusement, and recreation.
This move comes in direct response to Zomato's recent acquisition of PayTm's Insider businesses for approximately ₹2,048 crore and the launch of its District platform, which Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal described as potentially "a game changer" for expanding beyond food delivery.
The competition between competition between Swiggy and Zomato is now intensified, now battling not just in food delivery and quick commerce, but also in dining out and event experiences.
The scale and nationwide expansion of Scenes remain unclear, with the current rollout limited to Bengaluru. Swiggy has not yet disclosed its complete plans for the service or the full range of events it intends to offer.
