Guys, I received a mailer from Citibank today and I thought it might benefit all of you so I am posting it here. Although many of you might already be aware of this growing fraud, a reminder would surely help all of us to stay cautious.
• Fraudster collects victim’s personal banking information
• Fraudster approaches victim’s mobile operator with victim’s fake identity proofs & obtains a duplicate SIM card
• Mobile operator deactivates the original SIM card post successful verification & issues a replacement SIM
• Fraudster generates the One Time Password (OTP) which comes on the new SIM & carries out account transactions without victim’s knowledge
• If your mobile stops working for unusual reasons, check with your mobile operator immediately
• Never disclose Internet banking password/ATM PIN/Telephone PIN to anyone
• Do not disclose your mobile number on social media platforms
• Register for both SMS as well as e-mail alerts to stay informed about transactions on your account
• Never respond to unknown mails or calls asking your account details and registered mobile number
Never use your primary phone number for bank/investment accounts. Get a new number and use it specifically for bank/investment accounts — do not share this number with anyone.

Thanks for the heads-up….
SMS + email alerts is the best way to track all the transactions…. sadly not every bank provides this option….example – SBI
Sbi will not be affected by sim swap bcoz they dnt send internet banking username and pass on mobile unless ur card details are leaked its not an issue.
If ur card details get leaked a,card can be cloned and swapped at any retail store without needing ur mobile
U must have read, these days they are cloning ur sim card jst by calling u frm international no.
Dnt knw if it is true
Let me add the tip which I came to during a discussion with my banker. This is specially important if you keep large sums of liquid money in your accounts.

" Police learnt that bank officials are behind the crime and one Gopikrishna, a deputy manager of Axis bank at Peddapalli branch, Karimnagar in Telangana, had passed on information about high-profile clients, who had huge deposits, to his associates.
The accused bank staffers had managed to get a duplicate SIM from a private mobile service provider for Narasimhan’s after submitting a fake documents and got the prepaid connection converted to a post-paid connection. "
@niralaghatotkach Now how does one protect himself from the depraved employees of his own bank/investment firm?!

You said it is sbi employees in your previous comment but here you have mentioned fraud done by Axis bank employees. Why are you providing wrong info?

@myliferockkss One of my aunt had a similar issue. She got a call from SBI asking her if she had done any high amount transactions on a particular day, she said no & they informed her that a high amount transaction has happened and they wanted to confirm if any of her family members had done it. She again confirmed from her family members and said no. Later they said don’t worry, we will follow it up & resolved the issue. It seems SBI follows a double checking policy (2 persons check it) for all high amount transactions and if they find it suspicious, they immediately enquire the contact number provided by the account holder on the same day of the transaction.
So always keep the mobile no provided while opening a bank account in active use & even if you change it, immediately get it updated in your bank accounts.

It’s ok, Be careful about your comments. There is a saying like “Words Once Spoken Can’t Be Taken Back”… it also applies to the internet where it is modified a little bit like “Words Once written/typed on the Internet Can’t Be Taken Back”

One more thing, never take sim from shop owners, instead approach directly to company outlets, giving your identity / PAN cards xerox to stranger can lead you in danger.

After reading all those comments,
I contacted my mobile service provider Vodafone, (my connection is postpaid) to know that whether this kind of acts (Fraudster’s) are possible. The person told me that they won’t issue the new SIM card just blindly even though the fraudster submits all the required documents. They verify some other details, like last payment made and how, the number which you called frequently and finally the SIM card will be couriered to your registered address with them.
lol i took new voda sim (swap for my old)
last month as it got misplaced
they gave in 2 minutes and was activated instantly and no info like Recharge history or Call history were asked..

Bro, they wont ask any information for sim swap, just need to send a message from current active sim to activate new sim…. . few days back i went to store to take newsimcard for my lost simcard, i submitted my voter id, my photo, still they are not ready to provide simcard until i show original voter ID.. i tried in three stores, all same answer,, finally went home to bring voter id ..
Now sim swap policy has been too much relaxed which motivates such fraudsters

Bsnl asks for fir copy for issuing new sim if its lost.
Docomo asks for last recharge amount and date.
Docomo charged 100 rs while bsnl gave it for 20 rs.
