Hi,

I am getting a 3 year old MacBook Air M1 at 40k from a olx seller. Any thoughts if it is at all sensible to go for it?

Battery health is 87%, condition is good and seller seems genuine.

Absolutely not. A quick search on DD shows that price goes down to Rs 58.5k for a brand new one. You'll also get 1-yr Apple warranty at least. Macbooks are terribly expensive to repair. So, it is best you have warranty. Battery health and surface condition may be good but one never knows how much the laptop has been pushed (letting the battery drain to 0% regularly, overheating from running too many things at once etc). When you are paying Rs 40k for a second hand laptop it is best to pay another Rs 20k and get a brand new one. If this was a scooter/bike/car I would encourage you to go for it.

Why not consider the M2? Newer architecture is always better than the preceding technology. I know budget is a concern, but spending 40k on that old model is just too much. Also, the Big Billion Day isn't that far off. If you can wait, you might get the M2 at a decent price—a brand-new machine—and that extra money can buy you peace of mind

After a certain limit, speed doesn't matter. Humans won't be able to catch the millisecond differences in response times of M1 (which is quite fast) v/s M2.
I discourage all Apple purchases (because I don't see "value" in them) but I'll admit their M1 or later processors are just too fast. In the Intel world, a newer generation makes a lot of difference but in the Apple world you'll be splitting hairs between M1-M2-M3.

Thanks everyone for the inputs. I was thinking the same but was a lil tempted still.

My research too suggests that a M1 processor would meet all of my current requirements and the apple price ladder is such that every additional 20k gives such a tempting value that It keeps pushing the budget.

Another thing, cashify shows 37-38k as a tentative estimate if I were to sell that laptop to them. Not sure how well they operate but I had that as a backup in case I don't like the device after a few months and decide to sell it off.
