What crap rules! I pay 65 for one tv and 72 for another where one has channels for me & wife and 72 one has 2 cartoon packs for kid. Had paid 1299 for 3 years already for fta. Now just fta will cost for 2 packs we have subscribed. Sharma is in full swing before elections to loot customer and benefit first big telcos and now dth providers.

As per STAR Network website,

And as I have already told you that is just an illustrative example. Read the link you gave me. It is just an example.
Star is a broadcaster. It does not decide the network capacity fee.
That will be decided by the service provider

I am not sure why you people are not seriously contemplating the idea of cut the cord?

It’s not difficult. Can work even with 5mbps BSNL connection which costs 299 and you anyway need broadband at home.

I am just waiting for the clouds to get cleared. Once the clarity emerges, I may stop my Dish HD Club pack wich costs about ₹7k+ per annum and will settle down on Firestick + JioTV combo. I would save the complete cost of 7k. No fuss. No channel fees, no distribution fee, no tax.

Not all people have access to good internet connection, BSNL is typical government branch, not providing connection at many location

TRAI Says New Rules Won’t Increase Cable, DTH Bill, Or Hurt LCOs

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has dismissed the “fabrications and concoctions” being circulated on social media about the new tariff rules that will come into effect on December 29.

In a statement, the regulator countered two broad concerns on the upcoming tariff scheme — that consumers will have to pay far more to watch their channels, and that the new rules will impact the earnings of the local cable operators.

CONSUMER FEARS

The original TRAI tariff scheme was meant to dismantle the system of packages or bouquets used to force customers to buy unwanted channels, and provide them the option of buying only the channels they want.

TRAI reiterated this point in its latest statement and said if a customer only buys what he watches, then his bill will actually come down.

“As per data provided by the BARC, more than 90% of TV homes view or flip 50 or lesser number of channels,” TRAI said.

“If consumer chooses the channels that he really watches, then he will be paying a lesser amount compared to what he or she is paying now,” TRAI said.

However, the TRAI did not comment on the modifications made to the TRAI scheme by the Madras High Court. The Madras High Court had struck down the anti-bouquet measures contained in the TRAI order.

As a result, TV channel operators have come out with a pricing structure in which consumers will be practically forced to buy large packages of channels — whether they want to watch them or not — on December 29, defeating the purpose of the whole exercise.

While the original TRAI scheme would have resulted in individual channel prices of up to Rs 5 each, the modified scheme has led to channel prices rising to Rs 19 each for popular offerings.

As a result, even if a customer buys only 50 channels, he would have to shell out around Rs 850 (Rs 19 × 50) per month — which is two times what he’s paying now.

That said, the regulator has gone to the Supreme Court against the High Court order in an effort to reinstate its original rules and force broadcasters to bring down channel prices from Rs 19 to less than Rs 5.

The regulator also hinted that broadcasters will be forced to bring down their prices when they see that consumers are not willing to pay so much for a single channel.

Comparisons based on the Rs 19 figure are therefore “skewed and far from teh real market discovered prices most likely to be in vogue, once the new framework kicks in,” it said.

LCO FEARS

The TRAI also addressed fears by the section sections of stakeholders — the cable operators.

Under the current system, a cable operator or LCO collects between Rs 150 to Rs 300 per month from each household, keeps about half of it and passes on the other half to the feed provider, who then splits the money with the broadcaster.

Under the upcoming system, the local cable operator cannot take a share of the ‘content charges’ paid by the customer, but can only take part of the ‘capacity charge’ or network charge.

While content charges for a basic package will come to practically nothing, it could comprise more than 65% of the monthly payment in more costly plans.

Local cable operators fear that this new structure, in which content payments ‘pass through’ them, will reduce their earnings.

TRAI dismissed such fears and pointed out that it is up to the local operator to work out a satisfactory deal with his feed provider on sharing the network charge component.

“LCOs have the flexibility to negotiate their revenue share with the MSOs as per the structure provider under the model interconnect agreement,” TRAI said.

“The new framework does not alter the prevailing market structure under MIA/SIA based regime that exists since March 2016,” it said.

Yes with the original TRAI scheme consumer would have benifited, like in a day I flip through hardly 10 channels, and if we count occasionally watched channels too no one watch over 30 channels. According to TRAI original order max. Price for a channel should be ₹5, so by this dth bill would definitely have cut down. But the broadcasters and channels move against TRAI in Chennai court and made a mess. Though TRAI has moved to Supreme court against this. So here TRAI’s intention was in wellfare of consumers but broadcasters want to force us with their bouquet packs now which will eventually cost more. Hopefully TRAI win in Supreme court.

That is misleading as its a rating blackout being proposed. Not something that impacts the consumers to any extent.

29. What is network capacity fee?
‘Network Capacity Fee’ means the amount, excluding taxes, payable by a
subscriber to the Distributor of television channels for distribution of TV channels
subscribed by that subscriber and it does not include subscription fee for pay
channel or bouquet of pay channels, as the case may be. It is a kind of monthly
fixed charge for a service. TRAI has prescribed a ceiling of Rs. 130/- per month for
use of network capacity of a distributor for providing 100 channels to a subscriber.

30. What are Free to Air Channels? Do we have to pay for
subscribing only FTA channels?
Free-to-air television channel means a channel which is declared as such by the
broadcaster and for which no fee is to be paid by distributors to the Broadcasters;
No charges is to be paid by subscribers to distributors for FTA channels.

Why no distribution Dish/Tata/Airtel has started providing the selection of channels so far ?

It is 22-Dec. The order should come into affect on 29-Dec. 6 days to go. But there is no movement from any distributor. It seems that they are not in a mood to comply the order.

Still haven’t got my mind around this shite. But main question obviously remains what are the Free-to-Air channels to start with? I’m confident those will be garbage ones which no one watches anyway, but you gotta pay Rs.130 monthly on a fixed basis! This is ridiculous right!

Fta ko free of cost bol diya aur network fees ke naam pe 130 rs le rahe. assuming 18% tax, monthly total will be 154 rs. 1 saal ke 1850 rs to dene hi hai.

Jab tak sab channels ek dusre se exclusively broadcast aur charge nahi honge is b*kch**i ka kya matlab hai. Pehle 200-250 ka pack aata tha jisme most of the entertainment channels hote the ab 130+tax aur extra for other channels ka pack hoga. Bas pack ki value change hui. B*kch*di to wahi ki wahi rahi. Ab to bas jio jaldi se launch ho aur inko sikhaye ki DTH kaise chalate hain.

Some people, even on this thread sound very negative on TRAI ‘s move. But we haven’t even seen any base pack of ₹130 from any DTH platform. So many good channels are free, so many good channels after the negotiation became free and so many will be forced to become free if the subscriptions will be low. So dont be so pessimistic at least at this moment.

e.g.Arnab ’s Republic is a free to air channel. Discovery has reduced its channels prices by nearly 90%

I am hopeful that TRAI’s move will be a game changer. Most of the channels will become free, a few will become very cheap and a lot will shut because of very low viewership which in a way be helpful as they will create space on the available spectrum for newer and better channels.

1. so this means we have to pay 130+ tax minimum? Can we choose fta channels? How many paid channels can we choose in 130?
2.Are cost of paid channels different in every operator?
3.is cost of each sd and hd channel of operators out?

Helpful Helpful

1. yes, at least for indigital and hathway cable network consumers. ncf is actually price we are paying to get access of the 100 channels.
For example, if you choose 75 FTA and 25 pay, then you have to pay 130+ 25 pay channel price + tax.
2. I guess it is same for every operator if you pay individually for each channel. better buy bonquet of pay channels as broadcasters offering it at less price.
3. yes, plz check previous posts to get link.

“Sorry, I don’t buy the argument. If it wanted to make the channels cheaper it should have reduced the allowed MRP on the channel "

Sir, you have completely misunderstood a few things.

Once again, its not TRAI’s business to dictate the MRP of any channel. It can force rules not prices.
