Will Take uber or ola if the place is distant from BKC,
So suggest good hotel around with some decent pricing.

If you are otherwise somewhat conversant with Bombay (say: been there before) and if ma'am does not have health, mobility issues
then travelling 20-25 minutes (from the place of stay) too should be okay.
If one has to repeatedly come or in general.. stay for longer duration and needs the ladies, family to have a safer experience
then perhaps homestay options would work out better.
This is not to market airbnb or others, but if a decent landlord/ landlady are offer space in a safe, secure premises
that are clean, well maintained
then by building a rapport and lure of word-of-mouth publicity
one can even negotiate lower rates.
Otherwise, depending on one's lifestyle (standard of living)
options like Kanjurmarg, Ghatkopar, Vidyavihar or even Sion, Chembur are on or close to the central line.
While Kalina, Santacruz East, Bandra East are not too far, if one prefers to stay on the western line.
Besides the more recent Metros
Bombay is trifurcated, based on the MRT/ mass rapid transport lines.
Those 'local' trains operate on 'central' line, 'harbour' line, 'western' line.
Thus, many localities too identify themselves on the basis of this tribulation.
But one has to be cautious about East versus West, for any locality/station on these three lines.
For example, Kurla
has lines criss-cross for ALL three and long distance trains too.
Thus, some areas in Kurla are practically on the Harbour line, others might be closer to BKC.
If the local MLA, MP in your state, town can signoff on a recommendatory letter then you can even get priority in your state's guesthouse.
Hard luck if you are from within Maharashtra😄, but otherwise all these Asom Bhawan, Rajasthan Bhawan, Bihar Bhawan and do on, if available, are some of the safest and reasonably decent places to stay.
(Getting a vacant spot can be a mad rush, hence I suggested the bureaucracy 'jack'. Else i am not promoting the local politicians of your area.)
I do not know how ot works our with seniors, ladies accompanying
but in his youth, my own uncle had gone to Bombay with sone ₹50-₹60 in pocket, for giving some entrance exam.
He had stayed at the ੴgurudwara☬ in or near (what is today referred to as) GTB (Guru Tegh Bahadur) nagar or somewhere close to Sion.
So yes, that option is there. But he (my uncle) was CATEGORICALLY told to not shave or such (which he obviously respected and adhered to).
Similarly places like ISKCON, if someone has a membership or if someone has a 'jack'
(then they) might accommodate on priority.
But usually in Bombay 4-5 months waiting is there for the decent accommodations (at ISKCON, which are priced like hotels, even for members).
Again, unsure what the restrictions are. But may be those might be about food and lifestyle.
(Unsure, but maybe it might be restricted to brink in non-vegetarian fare.)
Again, I am not rooting for or marketing homestays, state bhawans, gurudwaras and I most definitely am not promoting ISKCON.
(I have never stayed in any of these either, except some homestays OUTSIDE India.)

Sofitel BKC is right opposite, book with an Accor travel advisor and you'll get $100 credit to use on spa/food and free breakfast.
Otherwise, look for an Airbnb. Nothing cheap in that area.
