Need suggestion regarding cookware - Iron or non-stick

Friends,

I have been using non-stick (teflon coated) cookware at home since many years. The one that I am currently using is from Wonderchef brand whose coating is almost gone, but I continue to use it. I have offlate started feeling lot of stomach issues and joint pain and I am not sure if all this is because of these cookwares but I need your suggestion if you guys have any inputs here.

I have been reading a lot about the efficacy of tradition Indian iron based cookware but I am also reading that it consumes lot of oil unlike teflon ones. So please can expert dimers guide me on whether I should switch to Iron based cookware or should I replace my worned out teflon cookware with another teflon cookware?

Do note I have a small child at home so I am also very concerned about his health and want to choose a cookware which gives maximum benefits and least side-effects.

FYI, we use filtered groundnut oil for cooking.

TIA for your help.

Cast iron or mitti handi (claypot)

Might not be 100% non stick but way healthy

Teflon is safe.

But food tastes best in iron utensils. May be because of heat dissipation.

It's not advisable to use utensils with damaged/worn out teflon coating.

Replace it.

The convenience of teflon coated cookware (over iron ones) cannot be ignored.

If you are concerned, there is no debate, go with iron utensils.

I will throw them right away.. All my Teflon coating cookware is around 10yrs old and the Teflon coating almost gone

Once there is a single scratch in the teflon coating, the cookware should be disposed. You should immediately throw your kadai or sell it as scrap and buy a new non stick. There is no harm in using Teflon coated cookware as long as the coating is intact and the cookware is not used at very high temperatures more than approx 250 degrees. In fact, no other cookware can beat the convenience of a Teflon coated non-stick cookware.

Yes. Teflon is good but dangerous if there is a scratch.

Replace the utensil with better alternatives like stainless steel or clay

@stranger333 -- After reading through available online content on non-stick utensils, years ago I made following changes in the way we cook.

  • Replaced non-stick dosa tawa with cast iron tawa. Look for the one which says 'lead' free.
  • Aluminum is bad so replaced aluminum pressure cookers with stainless steel, Hawkins is the best followed by Prestige.
  • Kadhai --  Thick stainless steel and one made of iron.
  • Skillet Pan -- Cast iron
  • No aluminum, no non-stick cookware, no plastic/melamine, no silicon spatulas instead started using cast iron, stainless  steel, ceramic, opal glass, glassware, wood etc.

Note: I'm skeptical about what these s called health org's conclude through their research. Till 2013, Teflon coating was termed as harmless but then they realized that the PFOA & PFAS (chemicals) can cause various health related problems including cancer. As per research Teflon coating which is free from PFOA & PFAS is even safe to eat!

Thanks a ton, bro.. So our cookers are all from Hawkins so guessing they are all stainless steel. For daily cooking we use a tawa for making roti/paratha/dosa and a kadhai for making deep fried food or any vegetable and a pan for making lentils / pulses. Which cast iron brand you suggest which will be lead free? Also I am seeing terms like pre-seasoned iron, so is it better to choose pre-seasoned?

Teflon is safe to use until it gets scratched. Once you see the coating scratched or peeling, throw it away and buy new.

Also only use wooden spoons and ladles when using non stick utensils.

Although iron cookware is great, it takes a little effort to maintain it. If you do, They will last you a lifetime.

Avoid Cooking tomatoes and other acidic foods in iron ware.

We used non-stick teflon coated utensils for dosa, omlette, etc for around 10 years. We did not wait for coating to be almost gone like you did, but coating did get scratched and I used to replace it whenever I got good deals. 4 years back my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. Do what you want with that info. There is no place for non-stick in our home anymore. You won't use much oil anyway even with iron tawa once its heated well.

Sad news bro.. I will replace asap, just searching for a good brand cast iron cookware which is good for cooking all kind of food as it is not practical for us at home to use different cookware for different type of food (as in use stainless steel for cooking tomato gravy, etc).

Try Tri Ply Stainless steel cookwares.

It has a aluminium base covered with stainless steel on both sides so no affect of Aluminium.

For other things use cast iron of good brands, worth the investment.

The Ceramic coating is also teflon but better than normal cheap ones, but it's also a scam in the long run.

I thought it's actual ceramic cookware but it's not.

Nowadays many have started using mud utensils of good quality for cooking but it's quite difficult maintaining it & costly due to less life span.

Best is stainless steel & iron . @stranger333

@freebaba @Demondealer @TridentDG @G-Gowda one last question before I buy the triply stainless steel cookware.. I did some more research and it says that Bergner, Stahl and Vinod or any other triply cookware which use 18/10 or 18/8 grade have nickel in it which is not safe.. and when I searched on Amazon I see Meyer is a brand which manufactures nickel free triply cookware.. but the amazon reviews are mixed as several people saying food gets burned or black spots start appearing after few usage.. even youtube reviews didn't help me much in deciding.. hence I am asking you guys that are the bergner and stahl cookware safe from viewpoint of nickel leeching in food? and is Meyer actually a good option?

Thank you guys for all the help

Please read this if not already.

Also, 100% Nickel free is what Meyer mentions but it does not talk about Chromium & Cadmium which has similar effects as Nickel. I think here we got to understand how we could avoid 'leeching' in food.
