Need suggestion on NRI status and Income Tax in India.

A friend of mine is in Merchant Navy and was maintaining NRI status from last 7 years , by being away from India for more than 6 months in a financial Year.

This Year , his stay in India was little more , so he was away from India for effectively 4 months and might have to pay tax on his salary earned this year.

My Question is if a candidate is NRI for last 7-8 years , is their any clause where he can get exemption from Income Tax eligibility this Year.

So.. his status is RNOR (resident but not ordinarily resident)?

I am assuming his income is over 1.5 million INR, so (as per the amendments since F.Y. 2020-2021) resident but not ordinarily resident.

Is tax slab different for RNOR ?

Is he onboard for only 4 months in this financial year ?

As financial year starts from 1st April so how he is counting now ?

In one financial year he has to onboard the ship for 6 months and 1 day.

Advice him to consult a CA . CA will advise him and tell all the advices according to his tax slab and exemptions.

Better to consult CA.

For RNOR, I think there is also the aspect of income (as you mentioned: slab).

Though I could be mistaken too.

hi karthi4052752
Checked with my friend he is maintaining NR (Non-resident) status from last 12 years , and this year he has failed to be abroad for more than 182 days.

Do u know anyone who has faced similar issue and how has he filed ITR in that year?
