Hi Dimers,

I am currently using Lenovo G50-70 Intel Core i3 4th Gen 4030U - (4 GB/1 TB HDD) with Win10 Pro OS from last 11 years but off late my laptop is running very slow like any operation takes more than 30 secs to perform and most of the time, windows/tasks freezes as well. I am not a heavy user i.e. I do not perform gaming or photo/video editing or programming at all. Normal tasks, like using MS apps, browsing internet, file transfers and watching movies thats it.

Based on the laptop specs and long time used till now, does it make sense now to spend money on this old laptop to speed it up like adding SSD? or upgrading RAM? or both. And if I can spend, approx how much I may need to spend? would it extend the life by lets say mininum 2-3 years or more? Because I dont want to spend extra money just for few months.

Kindly help with your suggestions/advice. Thanks.

Try to dual boot your system with any Linux distro, for eg. Ubuntu. You won't feel much difference w. r. t. functionality for normal usage.

Add these in sequence, if your budget permits

4GB RAM
512GB SSD (If NVMe slot available in laptop, go for it, then you can also keep HDD to store movies, else you'll have to go for SATA SDD, if you buy NVMe SSD you can use it in your new laptop too, if you purchase in future)

If budget permits more, remove 4gb RAM stick and add 2 8GB Sticks.

You should also consider buying a new laptop as 11 years is a lot of time and other parts may also nearing their dead state.

If his laptop 11 years old then it has less chance of having NVMe slot.

I have laptop from 2014. was running like turtle. I have same spec. but I5 and 4gb ram and 512gb HDD.
I just changed HDD to SSD, runs like butter now. Avoid upgrading RAM. reason , I read some cases, if you add 2 sticks of 4gb ram but they are of diff ram, machine wont start. plus you cant update ram without knowing how much your laptop supports. theres thing called upto for RAM and ROM. just change HDD to SSD, if it's still now fast enough increase RAM. but SSD will fix issues.

thanks, how much capacity SSD you replaced with? and how much did it cost? Instead of replacing, how about using both HDD and SSD simultaneously?

Before upgrade, make sure your laptop supports SSD. How much RAM slots you have and how many of them are free, etc.

Buy new one, exchange old laptop - preferably during BBD

don't make up this old laptop, its waste investment as you can not add latest versions RAM/SSD

  1. 128 Gb SSD for Windows i.e. C Drive (under 1000)

  2. HDD caddy to move your existing HDD to CD/DVD ROM and use it only for storage (under 200)

  3. 4Gb RAM (under 1000)

You can find out what kind of RAM and HDD you have from Lenevo's site by entering your model number or serial number
