Hi Dimers,

I noticed that my CIBIL score has dropped by 70 points due to late annual charges from AMEX. I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to resolve this issue.

To provide some context, my AMEX card expired in April 2024, and I didn't receive a new card until the second week of August. I assumed that since I didn't receive a new card and had no active account with AMEX, I didn't need to check my statements from April 2024 onwards as I don't have one to use. However, in the first week of August, I received a call from AMEX about an insurance product. When I inquired about my account status, they mentioned it was probably still active. This prompted me to check my statement, and I realized that although I hadn't received a new card, AMEX had charged me the annual fees.

I immediately contacted them in the same first week of August, and they sent me a new card around the second week of August. I made the payment during the last week of August, thinking everything was sorted out.

A couple of days ago, I got a notification that my CIBIL score had changed. When I checked, I was stunned to see a late payment impact from AMEX for July, which is when the annual charges were applied, since all the above confusion I didn't open the statements, and didn't make any payment which is usually done by due date which is around the last week of each month.

Could you please suggest how I might resolve this? Out of 384 total CIBIL payments shown, 383 are good, but this one issue caused my score to drop by 70 points.

Thank you, Dimers!

Strange case, not sure if it can be resolved.

Try this:

  • Raise a complaint to AMEX customer care to remove that missed payment because of the same thing that you mentioned here: i.e.: `they hadn't delivered the new card and at that time you didn't check the statement.`
  • If they deny, escalate the matter to level 2, level 3, nodal officer, or whoever you can.
  • If no luck, complain to the RBI ombudsman that AMex has levied charges without giving the card.
  • Meanwhile, try posting on Twitter that they are charging fees without issuing the card and destroying the customer's credit score. Try to shake their reputation in public.

Remember one thing, the fault is not only there but yours as well, since you didn't check the statements. But yeah you can fight for this.
