Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a typically free web-based distance learning program that's designed for large numbers of geographically dispersed students delivering learning content online to any person who wants to take a course, with no limit on attendance

A MOOC might be patterned on a college or university course, or it can be less structured. Although they don't always offer academic credits, these courses often offer a certification, enhance employment opportunities or further studies.

Typically, MOOCs are used for Higher education, Upskilling and Career advancement based upon courses / platforms selected & personal choices

Personally I use these Big libraries or Courses to fulfil my Skill Enhancement which helps me in Career Advancement (if not at least from Appraisal point of view) & then get a valued Certifications ( Learning as well as Posting on Linkedin)

Yes they are Beneficial especially with Flexibility of Learning at own pace, making it easier to balance with other commitments
Also with Variety of Courses across various platforms really helps to select from diverse interests
And some of these high valued courses are free from reputed institutions ( Oxford, Harvard , etc.& other times these comes with limited time free promotions(Thanks to some of our own Dimers for sharing such Contents)

I generally prefer Coursera followed by edX, then Udemy 

For example "The Machine Learning” course by Stanford University from Coursera is highly regarded and provides a solid foundation in AI that helped me to gain insights & helped in clearing Oracle Gen AI certifications

Many MOOCs offer certificates that are recognized by employers, particularly when they come from reputable institutions.

For example, Coursera’s certificates in data science are valued in the tech industry.
In fact some companies have tie up /collaborations with these platforms for better learning orientation & some courses are designed that way for companies specifics
In fact you can login with your company mail id with the partnered platforms to see only company specifics career oriented courses  

And For instance, certifications in programming languages or project management tools are often listed in job requirements

Some MOOCs offer pathways to formal education
 For example, edX’s MicroMasters programs can count towards a full Master’s degree
Similarly points are credited in Coursera which helps in lowering fees for joining Physical University or enrolling in school programming for same tech

While certificates from reputable institutions are recognized, many MOOCs lack formal accreditation or widespread industry recognition compared to traditional degree
A certificate from an online course may not carry the same weight as a degree from a recognized university

The main purpose of these courses is to gain knowledge in a specific field - these courses are very well designed by experts in a linear fashion as opposed to YT where it is tough to decide on the best channels and where to begin. YT videos are better suited to supplement these courses.

A lot of these courses help in preparing for the certifications that really matter - like Microsoft, AWS, Oracle etc. Those are the real deal.

Unless the certificate is from a really elite institution they wont count for much - so choose wisely when paying to get certificates.
