IRCTC downgraded my ticket from 3A to 3E

Yes it is possible if something happens to the 3a coach and if only 3e is available to prevent train cancellation they'll do it happened to me when garibrath express I'm planning to travel burned down just before the journey they replaced the coach with regular 3a

if railways can upgrade they can even downgrade

i agree 3E coach is very bad to travel

Full refund is possible if you decide to cancel your journey and file TDR. Once you travelled they can refund only the difference, which may be auto refunded to source 

You are traveled by 3e seat. So you need to pay charge for that seat . Do you want railway need to give that seat freely to you? Hadh hai. 

People are becoming too much greedy and illogical now. 

We can't just blame the OP here. Irctc/railways have so many shady practices. When you can say ticket is confirmed you should be able to give a seat number before hand, so that he can cancel for being downgraded.  Another atrocity is the RAC, it's all matter of luck and they will get paid double for the seat anyway. You can cancel RAC but have you seen overbooking of a flight assuming someone might not show up or a seat may lie vacant by chance?
The thugs eat away in refund  charges over lakhs of unconfirmed wait list tickets.

Railway made 3E thinking it'll be a hit - made 8% cheaper than 3A - as nobody like 3E anymore nobody books ticket in 3E - so railway downgrading wait list tickets of 3A to 3E - railway stopped production of new 3E - but already lunched ones will be filled like this downgrade

About ur right when u book a wait list ticket u r already consenting to travel where ever railway give you seat, u can check wait list rules in railway time table

In case of e-tickets booked in AC 3-tier are re-allotted in AC 3-tier economy, the difference of fare between AC 3-tier and AC 3-tier economy shall be automatically processed by IRCTC. If passenger does not want to travel in re-allotted lower class then he/she is eligible to get full refund by cancellation of ticket upto second charting of the train, or he/she can also file TDR upto 3 hours after actual departure time of the train. Passengers are requested to check their PNR status after first charting of the train and check for any SMS alerts sent by Indian Railways.

Faced the same sudden downgrade issue although I bought confirmed 3A tatkal ticket. When asked TTE he says 3A or 3E it's 3rd AC so no refund! Pathetic coach , so cramped for me and poor reply from supposed to be responsible TTE. It's forced downgrade without a consent! 

People comparing with overbooking of flight...I want to clarify that Railways Never downgrade your ticket due to overbooking...It always happens beacuse of non availability of that particular class rake.Still it provides an option to travel in lower class along with difference of fare or Cancel ticket with full refund...If you still think that it is a scam by IRCTC,In India Train berths are always fully occupied and even you wouldn't have opted for 3AC,Majority will still opt for 3E when 3AC is fully booked as we are mostly bothered about price,journey duration so there is no necessity to force to travel at last moment .And Government only recovers 57% percent for cost of travel on average..If you still have to compare with flight think twice 

Under this illiterate and looting government, railways have become worst, they want to loot and get fares even higher than flight tickets and provide service of local bus. Here are some things that has happenend in last 5-6 years -

1. Differential fare added and costs anywhere between 1000-2000 in 3ac/2ac, even if you book 2 months in advance, so a ticket costing rs. 3400 for 3AC (delhi-mumbai) becomes more than 5000 rs. 

2. Superfast charges, almost all trains are now superfast without any change in schedule or any penalty - so superfast charges are added anywhere between 50-250 rs. without any reason.

3. Senior citizen concession removed, so earlier my parents ticket costing 1500, is now costing 5000 which is triple due to the concession removed, increase in fares and the differential charges.

4. Post corona blankets bedsheets were not provided in trains, for which irctc charges 250 rs as laundry charges, but even when they did not provide, they continued charging laundry charges.

5. Platform tickets costed rs. 2-5 earlier, now are charged at Rs. 50 i.e. 1000% increase 

6. Online booking and payment fees increased, now if you pay online you are charged 1-2% extra also convenience charges are added.

7. Cancellation charges increased multifold, and on top of that GST on that.

8. On top of these the fares have also doubled, now no longer its affordable for poor people, earlier people could travel delhi patna etc. for 200 rs. each so costed around 1000 for a family but now it costs double or more.

This is ache din. This is truth. Now trains are costing for than flight tickets (e.g. del-mum, del-kol, del-bnglr).

Rampant looting is happening, and not to mention still under losses. Where is all this money going ?

The problem that I faced when my Grandparents were travelling:

1. Ticket got downgraded to 3E. Two 3E coaches were added and seat was provided in that.

2. There were 4 3A coaches. All those coaches had atleast 30% vacant seats each after chart preparation. There were seats available for current booking with lesser price.

3. So, we paid full and had to travel in 3E which was fully packed while current booking provided discounted seats for 3A.

Was very frustrated and TTE also didn't help much.

It so happens, anything happens in a far related government organization, the blame goes straight to gormint..🤣🤣

I know right, railways are very unorganized when it comes to ticketing. But did you write to them stating your concerns for the same?

We should first strongly say no to 3E coaches , we are ready to pay for 3A then why they are making 3E coaches.
