Sylvester Stallone is one of the most famous American Movie stars. With characters like Rocky and Rambo he is a household name in the hearts of millions.
During birth, a wrong gynecological procedure caused Stallone to have one sided paralysis. At school, his middle class being and his facial paralysis became a thing for others to make fun of.
He started body-building because he wanted to frighten those who bullied him. Slowly he started thinking of a career in movies.
Around 1974, he had a pregnant wife, a dog that he loved, a lot of bills to pay and no success in his movie career.
What he still had was a belief in his dream that he will make it big.
Soon a time came when he went broke. He was heavily under debt.
Restless, anxious, stressed and still loaded with hope that he WILL make it big.
Things got so bad that he had to sell his wife’s jewelry and ended up homeless. Sleeping at the New York Bus station for days.
The cold American winter forced him to choose between electricity and his dog. He stood outside a local store and sold his dog for $25.
Two weeks later, on TV he watched a boxing match between Mohammed Ali and Chuck Wepner. That match was like a flash of divine inspiration… For the next 20 hours he sat and wrote the script of what today is a cult movie, ROCKY.
In the words of Stallone, “After nearly 1500 rejections”, he got a production house to offer $125,000 for the script.
Despite the poverty, pains, pregnant wife and lost dog… His dream was to STAR in the movie as the MAIN LEAD.
In an era when heroes were super handsome men and spoke fluently, a body builder with a facial paralysis that made him stammer while speaking, made Stallone the wrong choice for any role.
The studio bluntly rejected his offer… And Stallone went back home with another failure.
A few weeks later, the studio offered him $250,000 for just the script, and not him.
He refused.
Soon they offered $350,000 for the script but not him.
At that time everyone was pushing him to accept. It would be MAD not to do so. He was making a fortune.
He still refused.
Someone in the studio really loved his script, and as fortune favors the brave. They finally accepted to give $35,000 for the script and have him as the lead star.
The rest as they say is history!
The movie was made for $1 million and went to make around $200 million.
It won the Oscar for Best Picture, Best Direction and Best Film Editing.
Stallone was a “bankable” hero for the next 20yrs, till the late 90s… with his movies making billions of dollars.
And what did he do with the first $35,000?
He stood outside the liquor store, where he sold his dog, for 3 days. Identified the man who had bought it, and finally got him back for $15,000.
AND IN THE WORDS OF ROCKY BALBOA –
“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”
― Sylvester Stallone, Rocky

Power of Money
By Adam Khoo ( Singapore ’s youngest millionaire at 26 yrs.)
Some of you may already know that I travel around the region pretty frequently, having to visit and conduct seminars at my offices in Malaysia , Indonesia , Thailand and Suzhou ( China ) . I am in the airport almost every other week so I get to bump into many people who have attended my seminars or have read my books.
Recently, someone came up to me on a plane to KL and looked rather shocked. He asked, ‘How come a millionaire like you is traveling economy?’ My reply was, ’That’s why I am a millionaire. ’ He still looked pretty confused.
This again confirms that greatest lie ever told about wealth (which I wrote about in my latest book ‘Secrets of Self-Made Millionaires’). Many people have been brainwashed to think that millionaires have to wear Gucci, Hugo Boss, Rolex, and sit on first class in air travel. This is why so many people never become rich because the moment they earn more money, they think that it is only natural that they spend more, putting them back to square one.
The truth is that most self-made millionaires are frugal and only spend on what is necessary and of value. That is why they are able to accumulate and multiply their wealth so much faster.
Over the last 7 years, I have saved about 80% of my income while today I save only about 60% (because I have my wife, mother in law, 2 maids, 2 kids, etc. to support). Still, it is way above most people who save 10% of their income (if they are lucky).
I refuse to buy a first class ticket or to buy a $300 shirt because I think that it is a complete waste of money. However, I happily pay $1,300 to send my 2-year old daughter to Julia Gabriel Speech and Drama without thinking twice.
When I joined the YEO (Young Entrepreneur’s Orgn) a few years back (YEO is an exclusive club open to those who are under 40 and make over $1m a year in their own business), I discovered that those who were self-made thought like me. Many of them with net worth well over $5 m, travelled economy class and some even drove Toyotas and Nissans, not Audis, Mercs, BMWs..
I noticed that it was only those who never had to work hard to build their own wealth (there were also a few ministers’ and tycoons’ sons in the club) who spent like there was no tomorrow. Somehow, when you did not have to build everything from scratch, you do not really value money. This is precisely the reason why a family’s wealth (no matter how much) rarely lasts past the third generation.
Thank God my rich dad foresaw this terrible possibility and refused to give me a cent to start my business.
Then some people ask me, ‘What is the point in making so much money if you don’t enjoy it?’ The thing is that I don’t really find happiness in buying branded clothes, jewellery or sitting first class. Even if buying something makes me happy it is only for a while, it does not last.
Material happiness never lasts, it just gives you a quick fix. After a while you feel lousy again and have to buy the next thing which you think will make you happy. I always think that if you need material things to make you happy, then you live a pretty sad and unfulfilled life..
Instead, what makes me happy is when I see my children laughing and playing and learning so fast. What makes me happy is when I see my companies and trainers reaching more and more people every year in so many more countries.
What makes me really happy is when I read all the emails about how my books and seminars have touched and inspired someone’s life.
What makes me really happy is reading all your wonderful posts about how this blog is inspiring you. This happiness makes me feel really good for a long time, much much more than what a Rolex would do for me.
I think the point I want to put across is that happiness must come from doing your life’s work (be it teaching, building homes, designing, trading, winning tournaments etc.) and the money that comes is only a by-product.
This must have been long long back.
I think its GD babu’s anecdote (Kumar Mangalam’s grandfather, (BK B) Babu’s father)
(some of what i heard, was hardcore village accent marwadi that i too can’t understand. Some is not fully translate’able also while keeping the ‘kataksh’ intact. So kindly bear)
so being this community elite/ respected, some donation seeking folks visited GD Birla.
They were welcomed to the angaan/sitout whatever jal-paan offered.
Meanwhile, from across the other room they heard Babu (GD Birla) scolding a child. That he ended up using/ wasting four match-sticks just trying to light some lamp/ puja diya.
Surprised and bit in awe, that a person who can scold his own bloodline over few matchsticks, can not really help us. The team tried to excuse on some pretext and started to leave.
Just then Babu also came out, exchanged plesantaries and asked them to stay and the dialogue over the purpose of visit continued.
They told the details of the community boarding (dharmshala) or whatever that was to be made. Hesitantly saying that they were looking for some token help, but its okay we will leave.
Babu called for the Munimji and asked the team about the project, location, expected use/numbers of room. Then asked how many people they had been to and what was collected.
The donation seeking group informed, that they barely started with the ‘samaj ke prathishtit’ people and Babus was the 2nd or 3rd pitstop.
CALM AS CUCUMBER, Babu simply asked his accounts head (Munimji) to immediately let the team have total project cost projection plus ten percent for the future or emergencies.
Now the shocked vistors exchanged looks and just one senior mustered the courage to ask why he scolded the grandchildren then about as incosequential as the match sticks.
Babu’s Reply:
ye taabar haa’n. Kaal puro byapaar sambhalno padsi. Abi su kifayat aur barbaadi nai karne ri samajh dalno avashyak hai..
Okay the English:
They are kids yet and can be moulded, trained. In future they’d be calling the shots of the whole business. If they dont understand the difference between wastage and real requirement, they will fail. I don’t want them to fail. What can be fruitfully done within ‘X’ means, MUST BE DONE WITHIN THAT much . I was merely giving them this ‘life lesson’.
BK Birla too was the same.
Once at Enka (Century Enka), some Akzo (Akzo Nobel, Holland) delegation was to visit. The visiting campus’ main access path looked all decked up. Beautiful flowers/ pots every three feet on both sides of the road.
Babu (BK Birla) had come a day earlier to Pune, saw all this and generally enquired who did the preparations.
The local Adminstration incharge sprung to the front (all were walking). Chest 56 and proudly claimed the honours.
BK Birla asked about the arrangement and costs. The manager happily jutted down how some rarer ones were driven from our (Birla’s have) nursery at Lonavala (it still exports to Amsterdam and UAE etcetera.).
BKB muttered to the senior (VP Personnel) next to him (in chaste Marwadi, the taunt was hillarious), that might as well stop the delegation cars at the outer gate and make them walk the 150feet till the building porch, because in a car they’ll zip past in 30 seconds.
he was equally particular about professionalism and being good at your job/purpose.
Once in a meeting (top management), he asked the Production Head about some ‘Padta’ numbers (padta is a typical cost accounting the Birlas or some old school groups follow).
Again, the middle aged, well paid DGM started rummaging his file/papers for the number.
Babu’s tort was heard across the room:
dictionary maa ghanai chokha shabad hove, par aapo re kaam ra tou waai hai jo aapo ne avey
underlying message: buddy buckle up, you ought to know at least the basic details of what you been doing past two quarters.
Exact meaning: a dictionary has thousands of nice words, but only the one’s ‘we know’ are of consequence.
He was also very punctual and expected his core members to be better than him.
Sarla bai was the same. (she expired recently, gem of a lady.. #sigh old memories)
Indeed, it is most satisfying when one does anything by taking pride in whatever one does and feels joyous at accomplishing what they set about to do.
Money well spent IS money well earned.
All this faff of CSR and the compulsion by law to do Corporate Social Responsibility came now. Those who have to do it, want to do it.. Have been doing it always, WITHOUT making a song and dance (PR, Press Release) over it.
am not promoting Birla thing, but how many passouts at BITS Pillani have got full funding externally, one only knows when you meet such previously economically weak Alumni in person.. who later speak about their Alma mater to give back, by way of teaching, recruiting or queitly providing scholarships and guidance to meritous students.
As recently as 16-18 years back Mr. Ratan Tata was on more than one occasion seen hailing a normal kali-peeli (normal black and yellow cab) to travel a short distance around Fort/ South Bombay. (maybe his staff or car was at Ballard Estate or vice versa. Or stuck in a jam in some by-lane). He didn’t go back to sit in his air-conditioned office to wait, simply used take a lift from a colleague or even the first taxi that was available was fine by him.
He invests everywhere, but unlike Ambanis, has a much more modest dwelling. His remark when asked about Antilla when on to become the headlines of international publications.
