Downgrading My Phone to Android 12 - Need Help

I use a Realme GT Master Edition as my primary device and it has worked great ever since I got it, didn't even feel like upgrading to a newer smartphone till now.

Realme recently pushed its Android 13/Realme UI 4 update to my phone and I forgot to turn off auto-updates. Now the phone is full of ads (there were none earlier), the UI is very slow, and the local music app keeps crashing every now and then. As expected, the camera quality has also degraded after the update and the battery life isn't what it used to be like. So I was wondering if I should downgrade my phone to Android 12 or not. Just a few months ago, this phone was way better than many latest smartphones in its price range, but now it's trash. I'm 100% sure that if I were to switch to a new smartphone, it wouldn't give me as great of an experience as this one when it ran A12.

So, here are my questions to anyone who can help me with the problem:

  • Should I downgrade my phone?
  • Since it's already out of its warranty period, would it be safe to do so?
  • If yes, would there be any disadvantages of downgrading to A12?
  • If all's good, how should I do it? Would a YT tutorial be helpful and risk-free?

Stock roms means original firmware released by manufacturer. It will be region specific. Install for your region.

1) if a previous stock ROM was better. Then better revert to it.

2) yes. Anyways it's out of warranty. If your newbie to flashing stock ROMs , watch YouTube videos and follow. It's pretty easy and safe.

3) experience after flashing stock ROM of A12 will be same as before experience.

4) follow 2nd point.

How about installing custom ROM's.

Also installing stock rom or rollback shouldn't be an issue.

Step 1: Download the roll back package in your phone and remember the location.

Link: Rollback package for realme GT Neo 2 5G

Step 2: Enter recovery mode to roll back:

Turn off your phone-->Long press the volume down and power buttons at the same time enter recovery mode-->Choose the language -->Install from storage--> Input your screen locked password-->Find & tap the rollback package to go back to the previous version.

It is true and not-so-true at the same time
Yes, Realme hasn't been doing well since Madhav Sheth left Realme. But, a brand's performance doesn't necessarily depend on a single person.

Maybe Realme is rolling out this update phase-wise in different regions.

any custom ROM not available?

A few A13 ROMs are available. Being based off of kernel 5.x there are no roadblocks to longterm custom ROM development. Don't know if it's a GKI 2.0 device though. It's however not good to gauge the quality of custom ROM development based only on the number of custom ROMs available. I made the same mistake twice, first in case of Redmi Note 10 Pro (RIP) and later in case of Poco F4. However it seems it got better eventually in case of the former so I am hoping that it comes true in case of the latter as well.

did you try hard reset using boot up menu ?

Nope
But that would not solve these issues, since the problem is with the latest UI of the phone. Realme UI has become crappy, and I can't use it anymore.

I had to downgrade as well to Android 12.  The A13 was slow and copy of realme/oppo OS and I did not like it one bit.

My device is One plus Nord 2.

All device data was wiped out after roll back..  But Phone is now usable at least.

Apart from Samsung/Apple all manufactures provide degraded OS in the name of OS upgrade.

Absolutely no issue after upgrading to MIUI 14/A13 from MIUI13/A12 in my Poco F4. I had read negative comments regarding MIUI updates in the past years so I didn't update for several months after it was released but ultimately gave in due to 5G requirement. Surprisingly there's no issue whatsoever. I didn't even factory reset the device after the upgrade as some had suggested as I am planning to unlock the bootloader and that will accomplish the above. Quality of MIUI updates varies according to the price range apparently (though that didn't prevent device bricking updates in flagship devices in 2022 ).

As far my experience, RealMe, OPPO, VIVO phones has very high security in their phones. They don't allow rooting or any software modification. After android 9, Google has introduced Anti Rollback system means you can't downgrade your phones after update. The software version is saved in RPMB partition of flash storage which is encrypted & only CPU can decrypt the partition & read or modify android software version. If you downgrade your phone, Anti Rollback protection will compare the version & if it finds lower version they either will remain in dead condition stuck in recovery or logo.

Just try a factory reset. In all custom ROMs it's mandatory to format data whenever upgrading to a newer Android version in order to avoid potential issues.

Got it...though I don't think a factory reset would help me
The problem is the UI itself and I have heard many times (including in this thread) that Realme phones are difficult to run custom ROMs on.
