Hii Guys!
Hii everyone… Good Morning
Have a Great Day ahead…
" ಕನ್ನಡಂ ಕತ್ತುರಿಯಲ್ತೆ" – ಮಹಾಕವಿ ಮುದ್ದಣ (ನಂದಳಿಕೆ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿನಾರಣಪ್ಪ)ನ ೧೪೩ನೇ ಜಯಂತಿ.
Kannadam Katturiyalthe? (Isn’t Kannada as fragrant as Kasturi – the perfume obtained from the stomach pods of the musk deer?)” This popular quote praising the Kannada language and culture came from a Tuluva, who has ensured that his name would remain forever etched in the literary history of Kannada. The Taluva was Nandalike Lakshminarayanappa, popularly known by his pseudonym Muddana. Preparations have begun to mark the 143rd birth anniversary of the poet scheduled to be held on January 24 in his village near here.
The moment his name comes up, even those who have only slightly been exposed to the Kannada literature will ask, “You mean Muddana of Muddana-Manorame fame?” Seen as the link between the old and new Kannada, he is called “Mungoli kavi” (poet of the dawn). The poet best remembered for the humorous and romantic conversations between the narrating couple of his well-known poetic-prose Sriramashwamedha , although scholars and critics can enumerate several other reasons to deem his works ground breaking.
Even though the poet is believed to have spent only a few years of his childhood in Nandalike – off Padubidri-Karkala Road near Belman – a memorial and a library named after him have been founded in the village, thanks to the efforts made of Nandalike Balachandra Rao, a writer and bank employee from Mangalore.
A majestic-tiled house has replaced the hut where the poet was born. The house, presently owned by random folks, flaunts a board that reads “Muddana was born here.”
Even though very few people use the village library, B. Suresh Rao, a shopkeeper and a fan of Muddana, said there were at least a 100 people in the village, who were well acquainted with the works of Muddana.
Barring the annual presentation of awards, instituted in the name of Muddana by Kavi Muddana Mitra Mandali, founded by Mr. Rao, hardly any other activity takes place in the village to commemorate the poet. However, Mr. Rao, who had two rooms full of Muddana memorabilia, documents and books, said he was determined to expand the memorial.
Mr. Rao, who has facilitated the publishing of Muddana’s books that were not in the printed format and brought out CDs and VCDs on Muddana, said that a lot more should be done to remember the poet, whom a Jananapith Award-winner described as one of the two laureates from history who deserve to remembered, the other one being Ratnakaravarni.
A life of poverty?
Though Muddana was remembered for the romantic conversations between him and his imaginary wife Manorame in his works, very little was known of his wife in real life Kalmala and he had to endure dire poverty according to founder of “Kavi Muddana Mitra Mandali Nandalike” Balachandra Rao. There was very little evidence to indicate that his marriage was a happy one, he said.
The man, who is fabled to be able to lift two (gunny) bags of rice at a time, had faced a series of misfortunes.
He could not get a government job and had to work in two capacities, as a physical education teacher and a clerk.
He could not see all his works published during his lifetime, which was cut short tuberculosis at the age of 31. But what writer Na. Damodar Shetty said in a write-up about him deserves a mention, “he was alone in his last days and this was his true poverty. But Muddana earned a decent salary for those days and there is no need to overstate his poverty.”
