Hello friends.
Please suggest some best HOLLYWOOD movies .
No action movies.
Suggest :
♣ Suspense thrillers
♣ Detective movies ( good ones like Sherlock )
♣ Best love stories
♣ Also suggest some tv seasons like Sherlock, Elementary, Hannibal )
♣ And other must see films ( best ones ).
Thanks for the tag (although with a typo of small ‘s’ in Snow) @saymyname
Regarding “The Shawshank Redemption” I would rate it among some of my favourites, coz while watching movie, I try to relate with Hero’s personal traits, and try to find a reason if what he/she is doing are justifiable. Also, the grit and determination part of Shawshank Redemption (can be compared with Cast Away, yr 2000), was one of its USP. It was not the plot or storyline or the end result, rather the planning-part and calmness of the character that I liked the most.
Talking about personal interests, I like all movies with some central lead hero with some values, principles and a mission or a reason to act in a particular way. So, almost all horror (or what some people refer as thriller) movies are out of my interest area. Also the witty and humorous movies are in my interest area.
Having said that I would like to throw in my recommendation, “My Cousin Vinny”… Its a VERY slow movie (specially first half), but in between has got lots of punchlines (well written dialogues), and towards the ends concludes with an excellent court-room drama (same as Damini’s Tareekh-pe-tareekh)…
My Favourite Movies, which I love to discuss about and suggest: Braveheart, Lord of the Rings, Matrix, Harry Potter, Game-of-Thrones (TV Series), Sherlock Holmes (TV Series, latest one), 300 etc etc
Just to discuss the differentiating factor between my taste in terms of movies, I would say Braveheart is one of my fav movie, because of the Lead Character William Wallace’s (Mel Gibson) character building and pursuance of something because of some reasons that I find justifiable. A movie from same genre, TROY is regarded as another masterpiece but I didn’t like it coz I wasn’t able to justify the reason for Achilles’ motivating factors. Most of the times I found him fighting for unjustifiable reasons.

I have been thinking to watch My Cousin Vinny from past few months but presently I am on Hindi Movie spree. Some vastly ignored movies, well-written movies. To name a few Rui ka Bojh, Khamosh Pani, Dev D, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye… other light movies like Listen-Amaya,Pushpak,Rocket Singh
And yes The Shawshank Redemption is there on that spot due to those emotions, Morgan Freeman voice, and their epic quotes…. If you love character-driven movies then you should see Lolita(1962) directed by Stanley Kubrick. The film is so so subtle that some have even said it to be better than the book. There is Lolita(1997) version but I am yet to watch that
And Troy went over my head could not find logic in many scenes

That is one movie which most of my friends recommended to me, with a disclaimer that the ending is extremely ‘sad’..
Because of this disclaimer I am not able to convince myself to watch it.
Talking about Good movies, another 2 Old-is-gold movies that I like to recommend to my friends are: 12 Angry Men, and Cinderella Man.
Both are masterpiece creations (second one is based on a true story and can be seen as a family movie… I mean is good for all age groups… including kids)
PS: My choice of movies is not narrow and not limited to only critically acclaimed movies… My The Favourite movie is “Gadar” (it was almost a complete package). Also I find movies like ‘Black’ a bit boring.

I generally avoid mythological/ancient times movies… Reason could be I don’t like that medieval period… I would either watch a movie potraying a rich person or a poor person be of recent times not old empire heritage kind of movies.
American Psycho is one of the movies where they show the insecurity among rich people, the obsession and many such events… The movie is violent one rated R with nudity, cuss words, blood everything.
@JonSnow Extremely sad! LOL. You want only happy endings or what?
Watch it.
12 Angry Men! Excellent!
Haven’t watched Cinderella Man.
I recommend Peaceful Warrior to everyone. I haven’t watched any other movie which touches on the ‘present moment awareness’ theme so subtly.
Nick Nolte is excellent with his deep eyes and voice. Perfect choice for the character.
And we have the White Collar detective as the coach.
The protagonist also did well but his name is difficult to remember.
Many of the critically acclaimed movies are just shit. Right.

The only reason you should watch it is Russell Crowe.
@JonSnow 12 Angry Men is a beautiful movie… Gadar,Black I saw them when I was a kid… So cannot comment on those. There is this movie called Adventureland which is one of my favourite movies but is rated very low at IMDB, I didn’t understand why its rated low there because the movie showed the transition summer of an individual going to college and working in an Adventureland to save money for his college.
@Magus Peaceful Warrior up next. Going to watch Mad Max Fury Road… Not exactly watch it but will just have a look as it won many awards
Gladiator I will some day but not feeling the urge to do it presently…
If you love long scenes then do watch the opening scene of Full Metal Jacket, you may watch the entire movie… But the first scene is epic.

My personal Opinion on Mad-Max Fury… It will leave you wanting for more… At the end, you will be like “Yeh kya tha”… Agar itna hi asan tha, to why didn’t they do it as the very first thing…. As a better substitute, you may watch “The Hunger Games” (series with 4 parts)

In my all time favourite list he has the maximum number of movies. His movies have everything suspense, satire, sensuality, horror, thrill… Just to show his greatness watch the movie Rear Window (there are other better ones but those can be a tad bit boring for few people). The whole movie Rear window(1954) is just filmed in one room and with the protagonist all the time in his chair with the fractured leg. His use of props is very very realistic and not like our sh!tty Bollywood movies where the hero gets the Super powers or rather other Hollywood movies where they send a coder/hacker to just type some random stuff or even those hollywood movies where they just try to play it cool with some cliches.
Actually most of movies mentioned in this thread are cliched but just because it is not done here in India, they are loving it. Even people watch the erotic thrillers just for the nudity, the actual experience is somewhat different if you just play it out in your mind (Watch Eyes Wide Shut ). Even True Detective is something like that (I had just watched one episode so I may not be correct here) but the reason for not watching that is it has Matthew Mcconaughey, I just don’t like his voice, I watched the Wolf of the Wall Street but there his voice kind of suited the scenario and even he had a very small screen time.

@Magus So started your movie-ing spree ?
P.S. I did not like Shawshank Redemption. May be it was perfect for that year 1994 but it quite impress me. Much of it was repetitive/predictive, and it does not deserve the top spot at IMDB, if you watch some indie movies you would find them a whole lot better than this
But Shawshank arguably deserves the top spot at imdb cos it wasn’t just another thriller, its story in itself was nerve-wrenching. Agree there are other movies that can occupy the top spot but Shawshank is a gem in itself and rightly deserves the accolades

I have watched all of Sir hitchcok’s movies and agree that Rear window was a masterpiece. But Shawshank arguably deserves to sit at the top of Imdb table as it was not another thriller but the story in itself was nerve wrenching.

I cannot agree more. I say he is the best director ever. Look at the vast genre of his movies and every movie is a quality stuff in all aspects be it writing, editing, picturisation… The opening shot of The Clockwork Orange is my favourite and it is really terrifying with the music the red blue screens opening upto a scary stare.
But if given a choice between Hitchcock and Kubrick, I will go for Hitchcock just because his films are exactly what I want to watch in a movie. Humour,Obsession, jealousy, sensuality… Everything comes in any movie he makes
