Amazon announces the beta launch of Rufus, a new generative AI-powered conversational shopping assistant, in India

Rufus is an expert shopping assistant trained on Amazon’s product catalogue and information from across the web, to answer customer questions on shopping needs, products, and comparisons, make recommendations based on this context, and facilitate product discovery in the same Amazon shopping experience customers use regularly.
Launching today in beta to a subset of customers on the Amazon.in mobile app, Rufus will progressively roll out in India in the coming weeks.
Amazon has been using AI very expansively for 25+ years to improve customer experiences. The personalised recommendations customers get when they shop the Amazon.in marketplace, the pick paths in our fulfillment centres, and the conversational capabilities of Alexa are just a few examples of experiences fuelled by AI. And we believe generative AI is going to change virtually all customer experiences that we know.
This past year, we’ve introduced a number of new generative AI-powered capabilities on the Amazon.in marketplace to make shopping even easier and more convenient. Our AI-generated review highlights provide customers with common themes from dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of reviews at a glance to help them quickly understand customer insights. We are also using generative AI to make product listings even more informative for customers by helping our selling partners write more engaging and effective titles and product descriptions, and enrich existing listings.

Building on these AI customer innovations, today we are launching Rufus in beta to customers in India. Customers in the U.S. have already asked Rufus tens of millions of questions, and we’re excited to introduce it in India.
From broad research at the start of a shopping journey such as “things to consider when buying a washing machine”, to comparisons such as “should I get a fitness band or a smart watch?” to more specific questions such as “are these durable?”, Rufus meaningfully improves how easy it is for customers to find and discover the best products to meet their needs, integrated seamlessly into the same Amazon shopping experience they use regularly.

After/despite spending billions on smart devices line-up.. they practically disowned it and all but started withdrawing from it.
Echo line-up never really evolved as much (as it could have/ should have).
Now they suddenly feel it is okay to further alienate themselves from it to pursue whatever is the fad of the season!
They already lost a lot to Microsoft, after Trump ensured that the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) contract largely goes to Microsoft.
Such LLM or AI tools would not really earn Amazon any defence contracts anytime soon.
U.S. defence is one of those who does not usually even consider costs and burns money as though it is an unlimited resource.
For consumer applications.. I dareday but.. this might be just another overhead.
The tangible yield from this investment or product development may not justify its purpose.. in the long run.
Then again, history has proven many wrong

But i still feel that we are almost a decade away from such technologies to transition to a meaningful level/ worthy application/ worthy 'use case scenario'.

I used Rufus on the Amazon US store and was impressed by the responses. I was looking a electronic product and asked Rufus if the product supports 220v. It clearly stated it could not find mention of that in either customer reviews or QnA and did not hallucinate. I cross verified and it was true. The product had 4K reviews and ratings.
Another instance was that there were two variants of the product (Regular and Deluxe). I asked Rufus to tell me the difference between the two and it clearly and accurately listed them. Nowadays sellers use very long names in the products adding all sorts of tag and keywords in it to try to boost the product to be shown in search results. So comparing two variants by frequently clicking each of them and studying the difference is quite time consuming. Rufus (Generate AI) has made that task quite convenient and helpful.
