Basically, the entire OS is a theme on top of regular vanilla Android.
Selected regular android while set up, then found there is no toggle to choose the special Nothing OS look in the settings. A few Google search, and it is just changing the icon pack and switching on dark theme!

Yes and that's actually a good thing, as there are very few phone companies giving close to stock OS for less bloat and lightweight experience

I think only Motorola and Nokia are giving stock Android these days. But I read some reviews saying even low end Moto phones are coming with some bloatware apps these days.

How is their OS performance though? Just by looking at pictures I thought it looked a bit clunky with a somewhat 'childish' theme focused a lot on personalization of looks.

It's great as it's very lightweight and close to stock Android. The dotted theme is applied very minimally and OS doesn't feel like a custom theme

as you said, it seems just icon pack and skin over vanilla OS
