It has 2 probes which act as variable resistors. The two probes allow the current to pass through the soil and then it gets the resistance value to measure the moisture value.

Soil hygrometer humidity detection module is used to detect moisture in the soil. It is sensitive to ambient humidity. The output level of the module is high when the soil is dry, else the output is low. The sensor can be used to make automatic watering systems.
