Still I din’t get it. Which model you are using? Mi-498 or Mi-498H
The first time I connected this phone with computer it recognized the phone and I could download files to microSD card.
But from the second time onwards the computer (Win 7) is no longer recognising.
I installed PDANet on my computer but still computer is saying to activate USB debugging mode.
Now where is this “USB debugging mode” in this phone? I cannot find it.
Any other ways to bypass this to make my phone recognisable through computer?

Enabling USB Debugging is mandatory to perform any adb/fastboot operations
Go to Settings > About > Click Build number multiple times (like 3-5 times)
This unlocks Developer options in settings, you will find an option to enable/disable usb debugging there

Enable developer settings as mentioned above, connect your phone to PC, Go to settings-developer option-“Select USB configuration” choose charging only and than choose back “MTP(Media Transfer Protocol” and it will show the sdcard on PC. You don’t need any PDANet etc.
Please delete as repeat post.

Great guys found the debugging mode after 7 hits to the “About phone” button.
However I do not see any button by the name of “USB configuration”.
Instead within developer options and under “Debugging” options there is a button to select “USB debugging” and below that a button saying " Revoke USB debugging authority".
But still after selecting the “USB debugging” button, I still cannot find this button to choose “charging only”.
As a result this phone is now getting detected by my computer but the microSD card is not being listed.
Maybe I am doing something wrong?
Obviously I am an absolute novice in this.

By the by anyone know how to reset/clear app data in android 6.0
Guys appreciate all the help but unfortunately things are not going the way other dimers are claiming it to be.
Please keep in mind I have an unupdated phone and tons of applications have been downloaded.
Also the first time I successfully connected to the computer I accidentally removed the phone without ejecting it.
Anyways after restarting the phone as advised by @dimeseight579, the only option I can see in the notification screen, is that “USB debugging connected. Touch to disable USB debugging” and nothing else.
The phone is also presently charging when connected to computer.
Also this phone device is getting listed in my computer’s Devices and printers.
But the microSD card is not showing up in My Computer..
So at a total loss on how to select this MTP.

Open settings, go to “Storage & USB” and then click on “Sandisk/nitro SD card” and then on top right click on “3 vertical dots” there you can see last option to use it as internal disk. You need to store the sd card data somewhere as it formats.
I found the solution to my query also i.e. to clear App data, go to Apps section in settings, click on concerned app’s Storage option where we can clear data options.

Many thanks for your help.
But see the difference between your case and mine is that in my case it is saying “Storage” instead of “Storage and USB”.
In any case once inside this section, then as per your advice I clicked on the three squares on right top and then an option “USB computer connection” popped up. Clicking on this pop-up then took me to where I could now select this MTP.
So finally found this elusive MTP but all these conversations with other dimers makes me think that maybe there are small differences between individual phones.
EDIT: 1. Also to clear App data I usually use ES File Explorer.
2. Also in spite of all steps the microSD card was not getting listed in computer. Then I went back and also activated “Revoke USB debugging authority” under developer options. Connected to computer with USB Debugging and MTP both ON. After phone got connected then I switched OFF USB debugging by clicking on Notification screen. And lo and behold the Phone is listed now in My Computer page and clicking on it brings up the microSD card.
Quite an adventure for me by any standards.
Available at 3878 now.

Let the phone to settle down after the update. Give it a day with full charge again and see the drain is still there or gone. If it’s still there post batt stats here.

Save your data
Goto Settings → Personal → Backup & reset → Factory data reset
Now RESET PHONE
After that install only necessary Apps
